Welcome
It could be a fault but..
Leave the unit powered on, outside with a clear view of the sky, for 15-20 mins and see what happens. It can take a very long time for a cold start fix.
If you get a fix - then you can continue to investigate any problems. Subsequent fixes should be much faster - once the unit has got the initial fix it will have all the necessary information about the satellite positions (almanac) that it needs. Long periods with a unit turned off render this information invalid hence the need for an 'initial' cold fix. _________________ Phil |

ive left it on the car dash for about 1hour and still no fix.
my uncle had another one of these that wouldnt power up so he took the antenna out of the faulty one and tried it in the new one, but still no fix.
do you think he needs a antenna booster? |

This may not be long enough - if the car has an athermic windscreen (reflective coating to reduce heating caused by sunlight) it may never get enough signal to get a fix. Try the unit in the garden. If there is a sat staus screen showing sats in view and signal strength (usually bar chart style) see what you are getting. In clear sky I would expect at least 6 and upto 10-11 sats with good signal strength.

Not been lucky with these has he
If he has an athermic windscreen then he may well want to look at getting an external antenna.
Or... he may want to consider getting his money back and buying a small GARMIN / TomTom unit (search Internet for some good prices at present). These have higher sensitivity GPS chips which should work better. _________________ Phil |
