Indeed, we have recently started cracking down on users who upload our database to P2P and Torrent sites as well as sell them on eBay.

As we can identify the originating user we will cancel the subscription/lifetime membership and ban anyone caught in the act. Four people have recently discovered this Twisted Evil

And we'll stop them. There is no profit to be made from Torrent sites, all they serve to do is damage the long term viability of the database.

The problem with other seeing user getting banned, they will down load the file and get someone else to Torrent, it may of been better just to ban them and keep a low profile about this

But it can still be traced back to the subscriber who downloaded the file. Advertising the fact that people have, and will, get banned is surely a deterrent.

Indeed, it matters not who uploads the file to the torrent, we can still trace the member who downloaded it from here and is ultimately to blame for sharing it.

The point here is that if more people realise we can identify them and will act then they may think again about uploading in the first place.

It's quite simple really, if we don't stop problem this then we will stop producing the database, it takes lots of work and expense, when we reach the point where it costs more to produce than we bring in we'll have no choice but to cease production.

To be frank...I had no idea that this was a problem (?), albeit perhaps a small one. Can I ask...do you 'sell' or licence your product to other competitors ? Or is each company relying on the goodwill of folks to continually send in data. It seems to me that more and more sat nav suppliers are selling gear with the added bonus of installed cameras. My son for example has been using CoPilot as part of a T Mobile deal and he/I wouldn't have the foggiest idea if it is 'up to date' with cameras...whatever that means.
Just how does this industry work?

Each data provider has their own methods of capturing the data, some have deals with AA & RAC to use their patrols to capture data, others retain small full time teams and we use a mixture of consumer reports, dedicated survey and verification teams.

Despite what you may think this is a huge problem, with some Torrent links getting many hundreds of downloads and some eBay sales racking up 300+ sales before we close them down, even if only a small proportion of them 'may' have otherwise become paid subscribers the financial loss is inescapable

I've not downloaded the camera database as of yet, but one thing always strikes me is that the difference between the phrase speed camera database and safety camera database. As we are repeatedly told by the powers that be that the latter is in fact the case, then surely it would be in the interests of the govt, insurance companies and motoring organisations to provide this information under the Freedom of Information; ideally free of charge.

It is estimated that the cost of a serious RTA is in excess of £200,000; rising dramatically if the 3rd party requires prolonged hospitalisation. If just one of these incidents could be prevented by drivers having accuarate speed camera information then that has to be a good thing.

They do.

Every Safety Camera Partnership has a website, where details of fixed camera positions and possible mobile sites can be found.
It's just that like many official websites, the information is incomplete, vague or often simply wrong.

the costs of the database are pretty much to cover hosting, database management, bandwidth costs etc not the actual data gathering itself. it takes a heck of a lot of time to keep the database up to date!
