Chester motorists could fall foul of 60 more speed cameras
Mar 26 2009
AN EXTRA 60 speed cameras and other measures to slow down traffic could be installed on major roads in and around Chester.
A multi-million pound scheme which reviewed speed limits on 144 Cheshire routes – 80 in Cheshire West and Chester – has resulted in recommendations for measures which would cost £4.7 million to implement.
The review, commissioned by Cheshire County Council on behalf of Safer Roads Partnership, comes after the Government issued guidance for setting speed limits on rural roads in 2006.
Cllr Eveleigh Moore-Dutton, portfolio holder for Transport and Highways, said the review took into account the location of shops, schools and children in the area and the history of accidents.
She said: “We are able to reduce speeds in the places where it is most necessary in order to save lives.”
Specialists from Hyder Consulting also recommended that many of the proposed changes should be accompanied by added speed management measures, identifying locations where fixed speed cameras would be suitable.
Almost a fifth of the 1,220km of the Cheshire A and B roads assessed qualified for a reduced speed limit – but any changes will have to be approved by the relevant Highway Authority after a period of public consultation.
Out of 25 A roads reviewed, consultants recommended fixed speed cameras at 56 locations, including eight on the A41, four on Parkgate Road (A540) and three on both the A56 and the A51.
An additional speed camera and speed limit reduction from 60mph to 50mph was recommended on Liverpool Road between Upton Lane and the A41.
Other types of speed control measures were also proposed on sections of the A548 Chester ring road and Sealand Road.
Recommendations for speed limit reductions included a 10mph reduction on the A540 Parkgate Road close to the A5117/M56 roundabout and reducing the limit on residential parts of Long Lane, Upton, from 40mph to 30mph.
A 20mph reduction was recommended on the A56 between Greenfield Lane and the M53.
Looks like there will be alot more accident's in cheshire.....

Any idea what the Consultancy fee was. Ratepayers in the area should be asking if it was worth it. _________________ Dennis

Typical of an Authority to quote distance in "foreign"! C'mon folks, we live in Great Britain and use miles for distance and not kilometres!
I'm surprised that they didn't quote the cost in Euros or American Dollars!
