There is a free worldwide basemap you can download from Garmin Website and which has index (town search) and which is routable!
This map was originally designed for the IQue 3600 but works on all Garmin GPSr with a memory slot.

The trick:
1°) Download the file from Garmin Website : there
2°) Rename the exe file in zip file
3°) Unzip the file and only keep the img file (gmapbmap.img) which size is about 33Mo
4°) Load the img file in your GPSr using either sendmap20 or IMG2GPS
5°) That's it; enjoy Wink

Hi Jammas.
What you suggest sounds great. I have just done steps 1-3 but as I have an I3 with UKmapping on board rather than on a transflash card, I chose the 'save as file' option in IMG2GPS and saved it to a different card.
I've checked that it is on the card but when I put it in the slot and switch on the I3, I can only see the original countries in the where to /address list.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Is only the single file GMAPBMAP.IMG needed on the card or do I need to do something with the GMAPBMAP.PDB file which was part of the unzipped Garmin download?
Any help appreciated.

No that's correct
Try to search a city in Africa or somewhere outside Europe .

Hi Jamas
Tried to do city search on LAGOS and MOMBASA. Can't find either.
I running v2.70 s/w. Read that there are problems with I3s with on board map data and v2.7. Could this be it?
At present have put GMAPBMAP.IMG in the root directory on card. Also on card is my garmin/poi folder, containing poi data. Is this OK? Should GMAPBMAP.IMG be in /garmin folder instead?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Jamas
Have moved file to the /garmin directory on card. Still can't find LAGOS or MOMBASA using city search ( or any other way)!
My POIs are still available in /custom points on I3, so the card seems OK, just no new cities anywhere.
Thanks for your continued help.

Should work.
See below a copy of a search of Lagos

and Mombasa

Did you upload the img file via img2gps or Sendmap 20 ?

Jamas

PS:Any other report of success/failure in uploading this basemap from other users ?

Hi Jamas
I am using img2gps v2.6. As I have an I3 that has its 'as shipped' maps built in, i.e. not stored on a transflash card, I am using the 'create file instead of upload' option and am checking the 'folder/card' button.
I am sending the file to a /garmin folder I have created on the transflash card using a card reader and then plugging it into the I3. I am looking for Lagos and Mombasa by searching Cities/search by name.
I think that gives all the details.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Greytop
The problem may due to the fact that you can't remove your UK map while on my side, I have to do it. (map on TF)
This problem may come from the i3 S/W: Try to upload to 2.9 as there are some search functions in case of multi maps that have been improved according to Garmin.

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.90:
- Improved address searches to allow for selecting which map to search on when multiple maps are available.
- Improved city searches to search across all available maps.

If it doesn't work, you can downgrade to 2.7 again. Wink

Hi Jamas
Just updated to firmware v2.9 and it seems to work fine now. Can now search for and navigate to many places I couldn't before.
This gives me what I need to get to places all over France etc in my camping car without buying expensive extra maps.Going to La Rochelle and Ile de Re next week ( great sea food ), and can now use the I3.

I have read on this forum of people not happy with some aspects of v2.9. Have you had any problems? I guess you must be running v2.9 or you couldn't find Mombasa!
Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Greytop,
I am pleased to read that this is now working. 8)
I am still in 2.7 and it is working but I can't find any city in USA.
Can you try a search on New York or Boston ?

Jamas

I would not rely on the Basemap for navigation!!
It is out of date[been around with the iQue for some time]
Very little detail [try it around an area you know]
It only has 33MB for most of the world, while the M25 in London requires 35MB from the Garmin CityNavigator Europe v8
La Rochelle maptile is 11MB in the Garmin CityNavigator Europe v8.
MetroGuide Europe v8 has the most upto date, routable maps, and is available on eBay for about £40!

To visit France using your GPS with a basemap for navigation is the same as travelling to France in a car and never getting out of first gear!
As well as that you can load MetroGuide Europe v8 onto your PC for route planning and transfer the routes onto some Garmin units.

Hi Jamas
Just searched on: New York, Boston. Toronto, Cancun. No places in US, Canada or Mexico visible. Looks like 'the americas' are not part of 'the world'. There may be a seperate base map for these?
Your advice is still very useful to me.

In the 'Find' on my iQue, there is usually a choice where to search.
If you put the map pointer on North America, then 'Find' 'Near map pointer' you will find the cities you are looking for!

It is not finding your cities as they are too far away! The iQue will only find them with the method above.

You are talking about the 'World Basemap' but there is an 'Atlantic Basemap' 31MB, which could be of more use in France!
