Avoiding a road

Have just got a 530 (having used TomTom on a PDA). IS there a way I can avoid a road which may have a temporary delay, but not using the avoid function. The following will show what I mean.

Travelling, was directed onto M25, which was slow (do not have TCM). I wanted to avoid M25 alltogether, but trying to use avoid all of M25 (Junction 11 to M4) seems not possible, as if I change direction to avoid junction, it re-routes me to the next junction, which means I keep going back towards M25, as opposed to going the more direct route.

Could try to add avoids for all juntcions, but there must surely be a better way.

I've never managed to find a way to do this. One thing I've done in the past is to set a multistop route to persuade it to use certain roads. This is an area the TomTom is better at.
