Thanks for all that. I don't mind having to reload the sound and assign it via CONTROL each time I do a cold reset as it's worth it! However, it would be even better not to have to!
Talking about the 530 Registry (a bit off subject), but have you found a key to make all the windows fit the screen in all the apps.? |

Negative on the windows screen problem, I'm not a reg hacker but it seems to me those apps have been written to only fit on a portrait screen and the way to go would be to force the 530 into portrait mode. How you do that is beyond me.
Anyhow for those brave enough to try it at your own risk I've put together a procedure to edit the registry to change the POI 'default' sound.
This isn't worth bothering with for those who can access the Control Panel using the installed taskbar application but I'm posting it here in the hope we can develop a procedure that can work on any 530. At the moment it's too fiddly to have to do every time the 530 goes through a cold restart anyhow.
Using Registry Workshop,
File
Connect Mobile Device Registry
Navigate to the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\snd\Event
Add a new value to the key of type 'Multi String Value'
Rename this new value Curr0
Open up (double click) .AllSounds value in this key and copy the value data to the clip board
(Ctrl C to copy)
Open up (double click) the Curr0 value then paste in the previously copied value data
(Ctrl V to paste)
Close this edit by pressing OK
Now open up (double click on the Curr0 value and you should see a list of sounds. On the 4th line down you should see the word 'default'
Change it to 'Startup' (WITHOUT THE QUOTES) or other suitable wavefile that happens to be in the Windows folder of the 530, including any you have put there yourself (11kHz Mono), don't include the .wav extension in this edit!
Open the .Scheme value in this key and change the value data to Curr0
Navigate to the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\snd\Scheme
Add a new string value to this key
Rename it Curr0
Open this newly created Curr0 value and enter 'Current Settings' as the value data (WITHOUT THE QUOTES)
At the moment I'm copying the required contents from the .AllSounds value and this is not ideal since it turns on many other sound events, for some reason Registry Workshop won't let me use the .DefaultSounds values since it sees blank lines in the file and complains when these are pasted to Curr0. I'm not sure if these extra sounds would be invoked by the 530 but I'd feel happier without them. I've only tried this on an already unlocked 530 so it needs testing on a locked one. For all I know these changes could be deleted instantly by a locked 530 anyhow!
Remember you try this at your own risk. |

Here's a much quicker sequence that just involves editing the .DefaultSounds value.
Again at your own risk!
Using Registry Workshop,
File
Connect Mobile Device Registry
Navigate to the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\snd\Event
Open (Double Click) the value .DefaultSounds
on the 4th line down of the value data change the word default to Startup or other suitable wavefile in the Windows folder of the 530.
Before pressing OK go through all the blank lines in this file and add a space character to eack one. This should allow you to OK the edit without problems.
Again this needs testing on a locked 530 - at your own risk! |

Thanks for making me think linearly! I have an app.called chOrientation (can't remember where I got it from...) which turns the screen into portrait mode. Just tried it and now I can see all of the window.
At first the taskbar stays towards the centre but by using the taskbar's MIN feature in the START menu and then opening it again it moves to the bottom. Nice to see what I've been missing in the various windows!
BTW, the MIN feature only works properly from Taskbar v2.3 onwards (sorry for still being a bit off topic). |

Thanks for the tip on the cHOrientation application I installed it and it works well, I found it in a file called Utils_icn530 downloaded from here
http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/20100TLSE_Utils_icn530.zip
On the sound front I just tried the simpler .DefaultSounds hack (posted above) on my 530, having previously reloaded it's software via smartst desktop and it seems to work a treat, still needed to be re-applied after a cold restart. I'm still uncertain if it works on a virgin 530 though. |

Virgin as in no unlocking of WinCE, etc? My 530 is standard bar the SP and SC database. If I feel brave enough I'll give it a go soonish. _________________ Tim |

Yes no unlocking etc. because even though smartst desktop reloaded my 530 I can't discount that something might have been left behind. |
