Everything for the GO's is on the SD Card. That is all you need to Backup. _________________ Richard

Oldboy, can you explain the bootloader bit to me. I've read a few times that such-and-such software update also updates the bootloader and going back to a previous version doesn't also return the bootloader to the version it was before. I'd sort of assumed that it must therefore reside on the unit somewhere.

As I understand it (and I'm looking for the sand bags already), the bootloader is one of the system Files that sit in the root of the SD Card.
When you re-boot (after a reset, connect to PC or take the Card out), the Bootloader File is run and as it is a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Program sits in the RAM waiting for you to turn the Device off, and then on.
As it is already in memory the Boot Time is greatly reduced A bit like having the BIOS on the PC already loaded in advance.
POICapture works in a similar way in that to work near instantly, it has to be loaded into memory first. Only difference is that this has to be done manually. _________________ Richard

Got it, thanks.
But... in that case wouldn't it get returned to its previous incarnation, if you go back to an earlier firmware version? |

Being a 'non-techie' I don't really know. It's only my understanding. (That's why I need sandbags)
Never having tried to down-grade it's not something I've picked up on. _________________ Richard

There is no difference between the 6.11 on the x10 series, and the 6.12 on the x00 series, as I upgraded my Go700 today using the info on yournav.com, and its exactly the same as on my mates Go910, but obviously without TTS and all the newer flashy bits on the x10 series.
No need for x10 owners to panic !! _________________ TomTomGo700

Well, I went to yourNav.com, downloaded HOME, connected my Go 700 and it found no updates.... so I can only assume as others have said, Tom Tom have pulled the update off.
Or am I not understanding it properly?
Have I done something wrong?
I'm off to yousendit.com to see if I can get it!

Confirmed. The only difference is that 6.120 will keep your old 5.x settings upon upgrade, while 6.110 will not. A mute point I would say since you can restore your settings very quickly. _________________ Lutz

No, your doing nothing wrong,
It has been pulled from the TomTom website,
Your going to the right place to get it.
Follow the instructions word for word, and its 2 minutes work to install it. Hope it works fine for you as it did for me..others have had problems, so do a back up first. _________________ TomTomGo700

Thanks for the info on backups oldboy
So I guess then it's just a matter of waiting for the update to come back on line.
I take it also that the Home program won't work fully until v6 is on the Go - I tried planning a route on the PC but couldn't get the virtual Tom to turn on. |

Thanks for the wise words LDR,
I have managed (after 10 attempts to download) to get the zip file from yousendit.com.
I have unzipped it on the PC and it gives me two folders, another zip file (can't remember what it's called as I'm at work now) and another file.
Can you guide me to the correct installation?!
Unzip the downloaded file
Copy and Paste the 4 files mentioned above straight into "HOME-DOWNLOADS"
OR
Am I supposed to unzip the other file too?
Any help appreciated. _________________ Steve

Hi
as a follow-up, I updated my Go 300 with 6.12 the other day with no problems... Now I have a problem! I needed to power it from the car charger, the battery was low. Upon connecting the car charger, with the unit on, the green light came on to show power was on, but the unit went off. It wouldn't switch on.
So I disconnected the car charger - it then powered on, but with the tom tom bongs, and a 1 minute wait for the screen to load. Ie powering it up while on had forced a reboot.
I repeated it all and the same happended. So there seems to be a bug on mine with operating via the car charger with 6.12

I am just about to leave on a short trip, and will report back later if I have any problems with my Go700, either with the firmware or the in car charger. _________________ TomTomGo700
