I've just 'upgraded' from v5 on a PPC to a 510 and I have to say, I am massively underwhelmed by the whole experience.

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the following:

Slow to find position when first switching on: My old wired unit used to pick up enough sats to get a good position in about 20-30 seconds.
My 510 takes between 2 and 3 minutes to get a position. Any reason for this? I thought the new chipset was supposed to be super-quick?
All other factors are equal, ie same car, same position etc etc

Battery life: After a full charge the 510 is only lasting about 4 hours on before the battery warning light is flashing. Is this normal?

The hands-free BT function is completely useless when doing more than about 20mph. Even with the external mic. Speaker is not loud enough and far to much external noise is picked up.

Impressed with the traffic updates though Smile helped me out today a great deal.

Thought?
Cheers
Chris

I have to agree with all of that - but having never owned a Sat Nav before, I have no comparisons to make.

I am very surprised at the battery life - it is rather pitiful. I was going to look into getting it hard wired into the car.

The other thing I'm finding, is that the on/off button is way too sensitive - when using the supplied case, it is very easy for the button to be switched on accidentally - thus draining away the battery when its stored.

Docking is an absolute nightmare, both at home and in the car - I am very confident that my connectors will break at somepoint soon.

The big selling point for me was the bluetooth connectivity, and you are right; it is a waste of time at any sort of speed - which is a shame because its a great feature. Its just not loud enough - and I drive a quiet car...

All that said, it is a fantastic piece of kit - everyone who has held it and switched on and played with it wants one! The next iPod maybe? I think so....

Well I'm glad its not just me then.

How long does your unit take to get a fix when you first switch it on? Is it 2-3 minutes like mine?

It really varies from 2-3 minutes as you say to 30 seconds. Mostly the former to be honest. But then I'm not massively bothered by that - switch on, mount up, drive off wait for signal....

I know it's hard, but it is MUCH quicker to achieve satellite lock if you can wait for it before moving off.
For my old 300, it's 20-30 seconds when stationary, 2-3 minutes if driving.
Also it will be quicker if you are in the same place as where you turned it off lasat.

I also note peole are waiting ages for irst cold fix ... my average was 1 hour 8 minutes .... a record ???

Make sure you have the correct map selected (910) then prod the reset switch (its near the power connector, not on the front face of the unit as that is the microphone - it doesn't like a pin stuck through it!!), I am surprised the unit refuses to sat fix in the car though - the GPS unit is very sensitive and works in all the cars I have tried, some with the thermal glass etc. (1400 miles in two weeks), different car every day nigh on - I find once I enter the pin number and the destination the device is ready for action, typical time is less than 30 seconds, add another ten seconds if I go for the music juke box options, one plus point is 40 seconds at idle gets the oil pressure up and will cause less damage than driving straight off, a welcome free-bee in my opinion - Mike

This is a very interesting post for me as I am just about to purchase a 510 which wqill be my first Sat Nav system. I am dissapointed to haer what u say about the bluetooth phone as this was an important point for me. Also, has anyone connected an IPOD to it, how does this work? Do you get play lists on the screen?

How does gpsquickfix actually work? I've loaded it, updated it and left it. What else do I have to do? Does it just work automatically?

GPS fix on my 910 is about 30-60 seconds on average. My go300 was faster.

Thanks

Anthony

I got my Tom Tom 510 from Maplins less than a week ago (mail order) been through all the trials and tribulations of my 1st PND.
It died today Crying or Very sad and has gone to my local Maplins store.
Someone else mentioned the on-off switch, a couple of times I took it out of its pouch and it had switched on. Today after using it to take me somewhere, it was packed away safely out of the car, when it was time to set it up to take me home................dead.
I think the switch is vulnerable to being pressed whilst in the pouch.
It took ages to link as well, in fact wouldn't do it whilst in car, I had to jump out and wander around the car while it thought about it, even after getting a fix in the garden before the trip.
Miss it though.

I returned mine today after it was randomly turning itself on and off at will. There is obviously a problem with the on/off switch.

Dixons didn't have any more in stock so I got a refund.

Now I'm really considering whether or not to buy a new one Confused

I'm considering waiting for the inevitable revised version where they will fix the power button and the crappy mount.

Yet, strangely you can download it directly from the device and it tells you the download was successful.
