Hi AlanCole.

Welcome

From what I can work out (and boy have I looked), it appears that the text to speech function does add the street names to your directions. Apparently it will also read out your text messages if you have a bluetooth phone hooked up to it.
Not sure if you can turn it off. Would hope so. It would be a major faux pas on TT's part if you can't.
Apart from all the maps, the one major advantage of the 910 over the 510 and 710 is that it has a massive hard drive instead of using SD cards, although you can buy huge cards these days.

With regards to the postcode function, the current GO300/500/700 has it and it would be suicidal for Tom Tom to remove it on their new range.

If you are only driving in the UK then I think the 510 would certainly be a good option (IMHO), if you don't want text to speech.

IME not necessarily an advantage, SD cards are likely to be much more reliable than a disk. And with a card you can easily restore from a backup to another card without needing to send the whole unit back for repair (unless the disk can be user swapped?)

Hi Tumbleweed
Excellent point. You may have just swayed me towards the 510.
(I don't drive in Europe, at all, ever).

Hi Jean.
The only difference I can see between the 510 & 710 (apart from the price) is that the 710 includes maps of whole of western Europe.
OK if you're driving in Europe, as I'm not, the 510 looks like the option for me. :D
Just gotta keep on twiddling our thumbs for now I guess, till the UK release.

We drive in Florida too - that was swaying me towards the 910.

Just wish it would hurry up and arrive in the UK!

Doesn’t interest me at all they are trying to pack to much into one device and this is when problems begin who on earth wants a built in Mp3 player? if i want to listen to my music that’s why i got a stereo. if i want to read my text messages i have a phone for that. they should stick to what it was first intended to do and that’s navigate people to their destination

Can't disagree with this - If you want all this from one unit buy a PDA based system.

Also, the 910 adds text-to-speech functionality which isn't available on the 510 or 710 (as it requires a hard drive for all the speech data). The 910 also has an MP3 player, audiobook player and picture slide shows that the lower models do not have.

I'm hanging on until the model with the toaster slot, croissant warmer and can-opener comes out :D

No, it is tightly tucked behind the screen, and requires major disassembly to be replaced. I would agree, SD cards are the better solution.

Spoken like a man with a screwdriver in his hand. Now where was that label that said warranty invalid if removed...

Wouldn't it be nice to have ANY update to Tom Tom 5 for Pocket PC? Loads of updates for the Go series but nothing since December 2005. I guess we Pocket PC/Palm users don't generate as much cash. Rolling Eyes

On the other hand, it could be that the Go series were in greater need of an update than the PDA's.Smile
