I llok on the Garmin website almost daily, just to check if there are any updates etc for the i3. Normally nothing, but today I see this:

http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/cityselectEuro.jsp

Anyone any ideas about this?
Mine is running 2.70 and v7 maps.
No CD was enclosed with the unit, and don't think I've got an unlock code.

But you have an i3, and the page says
Quote:
This software is included with the purchase of an Atlantic GPS V Deluxe, NavTalk® GSM Phone, iQue 3200 Atlantic, iQue 3600 Atlantic, GPS 18, cf Que, or Quest and is also available for purchase as a stand-alone product.

No mention of the i3 there.

yes I have seen the i3 page, and Tim, the drop down list for compatibility does show the i3, but seems as though you have to pruchase sep[erately, so not sure why you have to buy a 'new' transflash card with Europe maps when you can get v7 for the whole of europe???

It appears that the i3 only gives you UK and Ireland on a card.
You can buy other areas on cards!

The expensive CitySelect v7 [shortly to be v8] CD is not included. It is almost impossible to buy this CD in the UK.

ah, cheers for clearing that up!! :D

I re-downloaded POI loader from Garmin site, and camera pois including french ones from link on garmin site.

Not sure if it was the new POI loader, as it seemed to work fine with the POI's from MaFt and the cameras from here.

Any ideas if the basmaps cover France to Le mans though? As i'm planning goin to the 24hrs in June, and using the GPS would be good. I've tried finding LE MANS town on the i3, but didn't recognise it as a place name.

The standard UK i3 only appears to cover the northern coastal strip of France for routing purposes...good for a booze cruise - but not much else...when I go to Southern France in the Summer, I shall mostly be using MS AutoRoute Europe, hookd to my i3 with Franson GpsGate Express 8)

"MS AutoRoute Europe, hookd to my i3 with Franson GpsGate Express"

Do you hook it up using a laptop then? Or am I missing the point/details of this completely?

from what i understand he has a bit of kit that links the gps positional data from the i3 to software on his laptop so the i3 isn't doing the routing, just 'lending' it's gps data to the seperate software.

Hey,

thought that was perhaps how it was done.

Using the info from the 'making your own pois' thread, I found the Lat and Lon of the centre of le mans on multimap. I created a .csv file and put it in the i3.

I set it to navigate to Le mans, then reviewed the turns and distance, and it all seems to tie in ok. Guess the base maps on the unit are doing the job??!!

For those who are interested they figures I used are:

Lat:
48:00:28N (48.0077)
Lon:
0:11:55E (0.1986)

Cool! I tried the same thing for Eurodisney and it workout out the route no problem. It will only have the main roads but that far better than nothing! This is great for the Occaional trip to Europe.

thanks jonnybad

Precisely - the Franson app lets your i3 supply realtime GPS data via its USB cable, and furthermore converts the proprietary Garmin standard to NMEA standard *and* spoofs it to a serial (ie. COM) port of your choice - so easily enables feeds to MS Autoroute or any other apps that can accept NMEA data streams.

The express version costs $9.95 to license - so around £6 8)

I'm probably missing something simple - but having loaded a list of 3 places in france as lat and long onto the i3 - having made a .CSV and used the POI loader - how do pick them as destinations to navigate to?

The basemaps are pretty hopeless in my experience but perhaps the i3's ones have improved.

Take the memory card out of your i3 and take it for a drive if you want to see what they are like....
