I recently bought a StreetPilot 2720 with the GA-27C external antenna. Yesterday, while driving around fairly open terrain with the antenna, I was getting (on average) between 7-11 sats and 7-11 feet accuracy. Average was probably 9 sats and 9-10 feet.
I started driving the same route later without the antenna with the unit mounted directly on top of the clock in the center of the dash of a Chrysler 300M. On average, I was getting 6-9 sats and 9-18 feet accuracy on the same route, probably averaging 7 sats and 13-15 feet. On occasion I would see 11 sats and 7 feet accuract without the antenna, but not as much as with it.
My question is, the antenna is such a pain to put out and take in, and I worry about repeatedly plugging it into the unit (durability of plug and receptacle), is it even worth it? I'm happy as a clam with the accuracy without it and besides the geek in me getting excited over 7 foot accuracy, 18 feet is certainly no problem for automobile navigation.
Are there conditions where the antenna will really help? Does it significantly help around buildings, for example? I've decided to leave mine in the trunk (the boot, I think, for you folks across the pond) for the most part.

To be honest I have never found on mine yet that I have lost all sats
Mind you there is bound to be somewhere that it happens !
And I wouldnt have thought that having an extra 3 or 4 sats would make positioning any more accurate . This someone will shoot me down on if I am wrong I am sure
But the 2720 is a grand bit of kit
