depends how you look at it....for the majority i'd imagine, a map of the uk is enough for the uk peepz.
if you want real rip off.....look at tomtom units. |

dont you think they are way over priced?

I think it is extortionate. Garmin are asking for £80 per region and there are at least 6 regions. So that's £480 for full European maps. :x
I guess that people would be mad to buy all of them, but I have used my Garmin units in Scandinavia, Benelux, Germany, France and Italy at one time or another so the i3 wouldn't make sense to me.
To say that "most" people would only want UK coverage is a bit "Little Britain" in my opinion. Don't forget that the i3 is a European model and our friends on the continent have fewer barriers to crossing the borders than we do.
It seems to me that Garmin are selling this unit as a bit of a loss leader with profits cut to the bone and they are looking to make some profit on sales of extra maps.
If you want a UK only sat nav at an incredible price then you can't go too badly wrong with the i3. If you want European maps too, then look for a model that includes them in the price or as a reasonable optional extra.
The situation is not unlike that with mobile phones where they give you a mobile phone for free and make their profit from the contract, except that if you only want UK maps then you are laughing. _________________ Gone fishing! |

...or alternatively (should you just want mapping), get hold of a copy of MS AutoRoute Europe, the Franson GPSGate software (£10) - and use your i3 throughout Europe for a lot less than £480 (assuming you already own a laptop)

I got an I3 as I will perdominantly use it in the UK.
My colleague has also got one.
If we shared the cost of a France map (we're both off there in the summer, but at different times) would it be possible to use it in both units ?
Or does the software get registered to the unit ? |

Well, to be fair I think this is Garmin's RRP and there aren't many dealers selling the maps so the price may come down of course. I don't know if it will halve like the i3's street price though!
