As with any wireless device, sat reception can be critically affected by the view the aerial has of the sky. If you remove the ball jointed sucker mount, it is easy to get parts of your hand around the top of the case which is where the patch antenna is situated. Big clammy hands = bad news. Put it on the windscreen or dash, keep your hands aways as much as poss and give the little blighter a chance!

Thank you for your posting.

I thought I may be branded public enemy no.1 for posting anti Garmin comments in the garmin area, but hope I did not upset anyone, there are just my feelings about my new purchase. :

Your post wasn't at all hostile and your feelings are always welcomed. I have posted a lot of negative comments on the TomTom forums myself and find these discussions very useful in helping others decide which device to spend their hard-earned cash on. As others said and you suggested, It may be useful if you could get a replacement and use it for a while (leaving your TomTom at home) and see how you get on.

When I opened the box, the screen protector had previously been peeled off the garmins screen and there were fingerprints on the screen (which I have not wiped off yet)

I was wondering if it had been returned as faulty before.

Hi,

That is cetainly a possibility.

Personally, if I had purchased one, and then found (as you did) that the screen protector had been removed and that there were fingermarks on the screen, I would have immediately returned it for either a brand new and pristine replacement, or else a refund.

Not sure whether you mentioned which map version yours came with, so I assume it was version 8?
