You would only have to do it for a few years and you could reitre.

If I had the chance to make that kind of cash in that time span I coldn't resist the temptation. You can't blame them.

While I feel that some of the post have been justifiably deleted, I have seen other posts (nothing to do with this issue) not aimed at team members or the running of the site which have been allowed to remain. Now I am not suggesting that the other posts should be censored now, but I would sincerely hope that we see even handedness from now on.

Not sure what category (censorship or evebhandedness) to put belated editing of replies to show things in a better light as Darren did to my post in the speed camera database thread.

Unfortnately, when quoted the some in my post loses much of its meaning. As posted some has quite a different meaning than the 'some' it becomes when quoted.

I just had a look and today there are 25358 registered users of the forum. plus possibly twice as many unregistered users of the database

Who could turn down the chance to earn £300,000 to £400,000 a year profit from the database??? Not me. I dont blame you for charging if you can get away with it.

I suspect the people who run pocketgpsworld may have done the same flawed calculation and got greedy. In reality, the vast majority of those registered users are either:

1. those people that register and then forget their login details
2. those that login a few times to find out how to get their satnav working and then forget about the site
3. Those that make one "help I'm a newbie and I don't know how to download the camera database" who get pointed where they should have looked in the first place, and who use it once and then forget about the site.

It's not in the same league as Friends Reunited. That's about leisure and pleasure, whereas the camera database is about the avoidance of occasional financial pain.

In practice most of us are competent enough drivers to avoid getting caught out by big bright yellow Gatsos and are only likely to get 'done' by a copper hiding in a hedge, who isn't going to be in the database anyway.

For me, the camera database is like a celebrity voice or a mobile phone ringtone - alright if it's free, but not something I would pay for.

Maybe "money makes the world go round", but there is still space in the world for "community" over profit, for example in the Open Source community and the voluntary sector where people put in effort for the pleasure of sharing and the recognition of their peers, not for money.

Hopefully the moderators of this forum will be able to understand the motivation of people like davejh and stop trying to silence them by deleting their posts on the forum.

Just as an after thought. What will stop anyone who wants the database for free using POIEDIT to sync to the pocketgpsworld.com server to download the safety camera database then converting it into a format compatable with their device?. An easy task as POIEDIT has a short learning curve.

I think the fees will easily net £150,000 a year. anld likley double when it is advertised and marketed.

I my neighbour started a web site four years ago and I was shocked how much business can be created on the net in a short space of time. They make as much profit in one month now as they anticipated to make in a year.

the internet is a very powerfull money making tool

Almost forgot

I saw on a gadget program a few days ago there are about 100,000 sat navs systems a month being sold at he moment. I bet they would all like camera info for £2.00

say 15% of them buy the database. ... work it out for your self

Tim,

I'd like to know that the moderators are working to the same rules as have for some time been posted at the top of the forums list, and that these are applied consistently.

I only had a chance to briefly read the 'removed post' higher up this thread, and couldn't see why it was removed - the poster referred to another domain but did not IIRC post a link.

It seems that this forum is at a threshold, and pocketgpsworld need to decide whether it can continue as an 'open' forum, or whether they want to change it into a "sales channel" to serve their commercial interests.

(As I stated earlier, I don't have an axe to grind - I've never had any of my posts censored, and I'm not involved in any alternative free GPL-based offering.)

The modern feeling is that we should be able to get everything free no matter what it is.

Why is paying for a service bad?

For example nearly everyone appears to believe that music should be available as a free download. My question is simple - someone has worked hard and paid good money to make the music so why should it be free?

I suspect, from the post, that the response required was the reason why the mods have not responded to many posts.

I have to confess that I was hoping for something a little more specific. :D

Having to pay for the database is bad for a number of reasons all of which have been stated in the forum. But the underlying fact is that pocketgpsworld.com has stated many times throughout this site that the database will always remain free.
From the outset everyone who has contributed to the database believed that statement to be true.

And now the database is complete to the point where it simply needs to be maintained (BY YOU) they suddenly thought HEY we now have a saleable item that will appeal to a huge audience. Then bingo they first announce that they will charge everyone to use it. All hell breaks loose in the forum; posts from disgruntled members get deleted. Posts from members who suggest starting an alternative GPL licensed database get deleted. Then guess what, they semi backtrack and announce those who have contributed before a cut-off date will get it free. Heyup says Joe blogs, what about me, I didn’t contribute before the cut off date but I did after the cut-off date and I still won’t get it for free because somehow I’ve not put as much work into it even though I just uploaded 10 new speed cams. Mr Spock steps in and says that is highly illogical Mr Blogs, what do you intend to do about. Well Mr Spock I simply won’t bother contributing to the database at all. I will just download it off the net for free.

Those who try hard enough will find it for free somewhere on the net , lets face it what cant you find if you search enough ??

Im new to the forum and can say that as I didnt know it was said it would always be free i thught myself lucky that I got all this free stuff for nothing, but I do think that there comes a time when a service has to be paid for and in all reality 2 quid is begger all -

I think the only issue here is a moral one !! - Charge away as far as Im concerned.
