I was reading a post the other day about the security of your TT's.It was mentioned that leaving the mount visable when parked, was a clear indicator the vehicle MAY have the unit hidden somewhere.

I have just ordered a 700,so i don't know how much it weighs, but i was thinking of using 2 small circular velcro patches. These would be much less visable than a big mount stuck to the screen, and you could even place a something over the velcro on the dashboard to hide it completely, what about a small map? that would throw any potential thief off the scent.

Do you think it would be suitable? or does the TT unit need to be cushioned from vibrations? as i said,i don't own one yet,so bear with me.

I suspect it would wobble around too much. Ideally it needs to be as still as possible (relative to the user).

Hi carlosthejackal,

The tomtom is not that heavy, well the 300 which i have isn't.

When i park up i usally take the mount from the screen and place both the tomtom and mount either in glove compartment or place them in the floor compartment in the car.

Not sure the velcro idea would work - why don't you give it a try and report back?

Personally I remove everything from the car in the TomTom case - it can be a pain to carry around. But at least it's not at risk of being nicked.

Only thing is the bag has TOMTOM written on the side so I might get mugged (Shouldn't joke about that really) 8O .

I will try it as soon as i can.and report back.

It should not wobble,as it will be "stuck" to the dashboard.

As for removing the mount and leaving the equipment in the car,i thought someone said that the mount left a telltale mark.

As for carrying it around with you,i think it's time i took the wife shopping for a new handbag !!

As a TTG 300 user who has had their tt stolen DONT leave it in the car at anytime when unattended as trust me it will walk..These scumbags look at your windscreen and look for tell tail signs of the units i.e the circle left behind from the sucker. so i take everything out my car wipe my windscreen were the sucker as been and put the TTG in a small back pack and carry it with me..once bitten twice shy.....look after your unit they cost you a lot of money Wink

also there is very little under the go to attatch velcro to anyways. It is not a flat surface is it. It has the circlular space where the mount fits to so personally think velcro will not work. Trouble is if you do try it and it doesn't if you get the velcro stuck to the terminals under the unit and they get covered with the glue then when you try and use the proper mount it wont work as the contacts will be covered in glue and shite.

I had the same idea earlier today about the velcro! So I went to Tesco and got a pack. The "Sellotape" pack I bought (£1.97) splits down into little squares which are ideal.

Stuck a couple each side of the base of my TT300 - doesn't interfere with the mount - and the "hooks" on the dash. Stayed in place but when I pulled it off, the hooks part came unstuck from the dashboard - the velcro was too strong! But it held going round roundabouts and corners.

I'm now trying to stick four of the hook squares on the dash (2 each side of the TomTom) and hopefully they will "share the strain" when I pull the TomTom off of them, and stay stuck to the dash. I'm leaving them overnight to adhere strongly to the dash.

If not, I'll try sticking the hooks to the TT and the other soft furry bit to the dash - maybe the glue is stronger on that bit?

The packet did say not to leave them in bright sunlight so maybe the glue goes gooey and messes up the dash or just doesn't hold anymore - which is no good in the car in summer!

So if the test fails just have to keep sticking the mount to the window and wiping the glass after removing it. I'm sure the velcro will come in handy for something else!

I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi,
Exactly what i intended to do.

Did you remove the TT straight away? as i think the glue needs to set a bit before moving it. I used the velcro to stick the thin remote control for the tv in our kitchen,to the fridge door, once this had cured overnight, the velcro is stuck fast!

The heat from the sun might be an issue, but when the TT is in position,i was hoping the glue would shaded and not come unstuck. When the TT is removed,i was thinking my method of covering the pads left behind would stop the sun melting them.

Another thought, perhaps the velcro needs cutting to get the right size,so there is enough to hold the TT,but not too much that it is difficult to seperate the hooks/furry bit

Like i said, when mine arrives (fingers crossed) i will try it as well.

I experimented with velco, couldn't find a suitable mounting place in the car though. Remember that you can put the TT upside down and use the options to reverse the screen; hence giving a bigger surface for the velcro.

Been using velcro for a few days now and it works well. I've found a good position for it where the sun doesn't wash out the screen but easily viewable - all depends on the car I suppose. Once I left the velcro hooks to adhere properly to the dash they didn't come unstuck when I pulled them off. Still waiting for a day when we have some sun to test if the velcro glue weakens in a hot car...
