How do I get better reception in London?

Hi there,

I recently bought a Quest and have nothing but good things to say except that in places (i.e. Central London) with tall building reception is poor. What can I do to remedy this? Antenna? Help!!!

Throw the Quest away and get a device with SiRF III chipset.

It's up to you really, personally I would go for an external antenna, but I don't know much about the Quest in terms of how easy it is to connect and disconnect the external antenna.

Thanks but it is not obviously clear how to connect an external antenna. And which antenna do you recommend. Thanks again.

the antennas are all the same - ceramic patch. The difference is just the connector, either MCX or MMCX. Look at the inner pin - if it has a white isolator around it then it's MCX, if it is bare then it is MMCX

I bought a cheap one off ebay and it works brilliantly, although never tried London with it yet.

Forgive me if I'm wrong .... GPS is line of sight ... if you can't get the buildings out the way of sufficient saterlite signals ... then you wont get any positioning data. This will be the same whatever GPS system you are using.

Correct, but behind the windshield the roof of the car is blocking half the sky. Using an external antenna on the roof will give you maximum sky-view, not less.

I'm new to GPS and the amazin Quest, so could anyone provide a more detailed instruction as to how to install. Would this mean running wires throughout the car or could it be connected to the car radio antenna (more discreetly) somehow? Thanks for all the input. Cheers

I keep mine in the boot with enough loose cable to reach out to the roof, the anttenas are magnetic fixing. I have routed the cable under the carpet and up to the dash via the rubber front door seal. There is just enough loose cable on show to connect to the quest but not look untidy when the quest is not there. Didn't need any tools or permanent fixings at all, took about 10 minutes to do!

Even with an external antenna, how much better will reception be??? Of note, I have been walking around with it in Central London (Covent Garden to be exact) and it takes sometime to pickup a decent signal. This comes and goes. Thanks
