Bought an i3 from Argos at £179.99 yesterday with V2.3 and V7 maps. Have upgraded to 2.7 and installed POI database etc.

So far no major problems but it has frozen up a few times. Once when switching from 2D to 3D map view which required removing the batteries to fix.

Another freeze happened for no apparent reason.

This is my first GPS kit and I'm in two minds about the i3. I would like it to give the total route distance somewhere, maybe using 'review turns'. Also a constant speed read out would be good although the speedo on my car works just fine.

Having said that, I am quite impressed so far, especially for £180 as anything near cost at least £50 more.

From my own experience as a new purchaser too, i have found it to be most stable running V2.50 and plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket with no batteries inserted in it Confused

As with most of these problems, folks seem to have different experiences with different software updates. The problem is that Garmin only have the latest on their web site.

What would be great is a library of past versions for 'downgrade' should a new version cause problems.

Anyone have a copy of 2.5 available?

Iv'e never had a lock up and i use ver2.5 with Nimh Rechargeable 2600Mah batteries.... Smile

I suggest you keep Batteries in the unit at all times..

If you don't have batteries in the unit even when using the main from your car it can take longer to get a fix on satellites...It states this in the Garmin i3 Manual which can be found online at Garmins website... Driving

Well i have seen alot of people on here talk about lockups when they have had batteries in the unit as well as using the car charger (unless this was with earlier/later software versions and because they had not set the battery type correctly in the menu option or using low power old design of batteries?

Do you mean it takes longer getting a satelite fix initially when getting in the car and starting it up or every time you use it (and even getting a fix when your driving?)

Thanks for your help i will take a look at the online manual.

This has probably been covered before Embarassed

Can i use rechargable high-capacity NiMh 2300+ mAh Batteries safely? (can i use cheap brand batteries e.g. Hipower.. or should i use uniross or what?)

Does it chew through the batteries first and then use the power from the car charger.... or just feed through the charger and keep the batteries charged... or eat both?

How long do the batteries last in it?

***you can use rechargables and alkaline batterys..make sure you set the battery type via the menu

''Does it chew through the batteries first and then use the power from the car charger.... or just feed through the charger and keep the batteries charged... or eat both? ''

***as soon as you plug an external power supply in the batterys are disabled..i dont think the i3 cahrges any rechargables put in it

''How long do the batteries last in it?''

*** approx 6 hours acoording to garmin..probaly more if you use the car power lead all the time..

well, considering it's 3.30pm and your post was from 4.15pm... i think the clock on your computer is out. either that or you need to set the time right (as GMT) in your profile page ;) i've noticed it on a few threads - not just with you though.
