The i3 operates at 4.75 - 5.25Vdc from the cigar socket on the provided lead with a stepdown transformer. The batteries, in series, output 3Vdc. The unit will run on 12v but will sooner rather than later die. Personally I wouldn't risk it. I bought that lead as well from another source, but when I realised it was a 12Vdc feed, I put it up for sale on eBay. As a Blackberry lead by the way not for the i3.

My Blackberry charger operates at 5v (says so on it), through the same connection and lead that also connects to USB (its a charger plus USB lead). Also I think USB power is 5v. So the Blackberry lead would be stepped down to 5v. Also I saw a 5v mini USB car charger cable by oakley in the Cotswold shop which would do it.

I bought a blackberry car charger as well for my i3 and it works fine.

Surely if the voltage was incorrect this would result in a pretty immediate knackering of your i3 or erratic operating of the unit.
