Where did you get your Zen one? My wife has a Zen and I think it has better sound than the Ipod
Funnily enough, my wife has a Philips 20g player (HDD120), and I was very impressed with that for both the styling, and the audio.
Around the same time I bought an Archos AV440 (bit of a film buff) and that has the best audio I've heard out of a portable player.
Before I bought the AV440, I did previously have a Goodmans 40G personal media player, but returned it because the audio quality was very poor, and the video conversion almost impossible - screen was good, though.
After experiencing the Goodmans PMP, the audio output wasn't good, nor was it particularly loud, so I bought a headphone amp (boostaroo), but with my AV440, I don't need it, it seems to have all the volume you'd ever need, and the best quality audio I've experiencd in a portie.
