I only use my i3 in the car plugged into the cigar lighter. The only time the battery is in use is when I turn off the power and the unit says that it will switch off in 30 seconds.
I have now put in my third set of batteries in 10 days. I only do one trip a day so I am averaging batteries every five days with 30 seconds of battery use a day. Surely this can't be right. |

| garmin site states that the typical use is 6 hours....it all also depends on what type of batterys you use.i use duracell and i do the same as you and only use the power cable.my batterys have lasted me about 4 weeks now. |

I agree , I don't think it is right. I have had duracell in mine for a month and still got three bars. Have you tried the unit without batteries while plugged into the mains to see what happens? Bit of a mystery, sorry can't be of more help.  |

| I'm wondering if the USB plug is not switching off the battery when engaged so that the battery still has an output even though there is a feed through the USB. |

I have now fitted re-chargeable 2500mAH Ni-Mh. See if they do any better.
Anyone know when you select Ni-Mh on the menu the i3 re-charges them? |

The i3 does not recharge its batteries, but rechargeables should last much longer than alkalines when used in it. Sounds as though yours is faulty though.

| The reason for the Alkaline / NiMH option is that battery life is determined by the discharge curve which is different for both types so if the wrong type is selected the unit could determine the battery is flat long before it really is, As a general rule re-chargables have less capacity than good Alkalines. |

Does you i3 start automatically when you turn the ignition or plug it in with the car running? It should. If not you may not have plugged it into the cigar lighter socket properly (easy to do) or there's a fault in the connector. Pretty basic I know but sometimes its easy to miss the obvious. |

| Yes, starts up straight away when I turn on the ignition and shuts down with the 30 second message when I switch the ignition off. |

I'm leaving the unit plugged into the PC all day and will check battery life tonight.
I can't find the three bars mentioned in an earlier link, only the signal bars.
Where are they. |
