To test things out, I selected several POI groups I didn't previously have installed.
A couple that I tried appear to be lacking .bmp files - and POIEdit complained about that (though only on the first sync).
The error is something like:
Cannot download "http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/poisync/UK/KFC.bmp" because of the following error:
Object not found
Please check your internet connection and Internet Explorer proxy settings (optionally you can set the proxy settings manually from the "Online | Proxy Settings" menu)
OK
I get the same error with Shell_Petrol_Stations.bmp
It looks like a bit of graphic design is needed for some of the POI groups - but that's nothing to do with the beta...
The other thing that fools me slightly is that POIEdit leaves the "Updating..." dialog open - though, again, that's really nothing to do with the beta, other than possibly an issue of documentation.

On my 1st sync I got the same error but for Esso, then on the next sync for KFC, next sync Marriott...
Each time I get further through the sync and there are POI files appearing in my map directory, just some BMPs missing.
Looking good... |

I get the same error message as above but without being able to download anything. I've unchecked the 'Auto configure' box in the internet settings, but still getting nowhere. Any advice? _________________ It seems I don't know anything after all |

Thanks guys, looks like there was a problem when I switched to another FTP client last night, no BMP's went over in the batch update.
Problems with the following BMP's have now been fixed:-- Airports_UK
- Esso_Petrol_Stations
- KFC
- Marriott
- Pizzahut
- Shell_Petrol_Stations
- Texaco_Petrol_Stations
- Total_Petrol_Stations
I also noticed the McDonalds_Midlands OV2 and BMP were missing, and these have been added.
I do agree with a graphics design, if anyone wants to do any, I can upload them. Some of the logos are pretty poor.
Tim, are you running through a proxy server ? Can you open POI-Edit and then select FILE | OPEN REMOTE and after about 30 seconds you should get a window to your Pocket PC ? If you get this okay, then the connection between POI-Edit and the Pocket PC is okay, but it's probably you're internet settings. Perhaps you're using a proxy server that's blocking access ? |

Everything OK now, thanks.
Re. the graphics: Rasoft do a neat little package for editing bitmaps & jpegs on your handheld, have a look if you haven't seen it. _________________ It seems I don't know anything after all |

Only problem I had is that I had downloaded the McDonalds POI about an hour earlier for the POI listsings prior to downloading POIEdit. When I checked TT for the POIs that were available i had two versions - one (first download) called McDonalds and the second (POIEdit download) called McDonalds_Midlands. I hadn't changed the name of either - was there a name change for this file at PocketGPS in the hour or so between download of two files? (18:46 to 20:56). Same also occurred for Little Chef but I first loaded that back in April.
Dave - have emailed a Little Chef bitmap to you.

Yep, I've been finding issues with the POI's we have on the POI page. Mainly because a lot have spaces in them, and fail to download correctly with POI-Edit. I've changed these in the sync, and there are also some where I've tried to make it a little bit more descriptive, so there will be some although identical in the Sync Service and the POI page, they may have slightly different names. I've thought about renaming these on the POI page, but this may confuse anyone who's downloaded them in the past.
Thanks for the Little Chef bitmap, I'll add that in shortly. |

Hmm,
I have no probs with you getting a little chef bitmap from elsewhere, but I did include it in the original zip file I sent you.
I had a couple of personal queries regarding it and I thought you had omitted it for 'Copyright' issues
I expect RobMob's will be just as good

| I was going to strip all copyrighted bitmaps from the POI's, but had a change of decision. We do have to watch regarding copyright issues, Ordnance Survey have been the biggest problem we've experienced. Technically the images or logos may be copyright of these companies, but I doubt that the relevant companies are going to complain about them being used, and re-thinking this we have to be pragmatic. I'm sure the companies won't mind, especially when it helps people locate their premises, so I've decided to leave/re-add these back in. If we do get any copyright issues coming out of this in the future then I may remove them, but we'll see how it goes. At the end of the day, we're helping people get there so they can spend money with those companies, so I doubt they'll mind too much. |

Rob, Thanks I forgot about that.
Dave, I agree with you, but corporates aren't always logical. But if they are really bothered then they'll complain and we'll create a 'different' logo

I've just removed all POI related files from my MAP dir, while leaving POIEdit's config unchanged.
Hit the PoiEdit sync button and I had a fully sucessful sync - 28 POIs and their BMPs have all re-appeared in my map directory. GREAT! |

| One thing I should say just in case anyone thinks otherwise, our sync service (like every other sync service), is a download sync only service. If you modify POI's, you will need to send them in to us to include into the new sync service, this is mainly due to security reasons, if we allowed people to upload, then potentially hackers could get onto our server and trash it, so we choose only to offer a download service. |

Thanks for the new service!
I just tried it here and to start with POIEditcomplained about proxy settings right from the start when it checks for updates to POIEdit itself.
I went to Tools:Proxy settings and chose Use Internet Explorer settings.
I eventually got it to sync for the first time and it certainly did load new POIs and overwrite old ones OK.
However, I thought I would try a second time by trying autoupdate
I now get " Could not create remote file Storage Card\Scotland Navigator Map\POCKETGPS_UK_SC.ov2"
Any ideas? Do I need to set manual proxy settings? I don't use a web proxy normally.
Edit: I have set manual proxy (none) and I can now check the version of POIEdit OK - but am still not able to autoupdate - perhaps the server is overloaded, I'll try again later. _________________ David |

Further update, I restarted the PC and update appears to work now, though i still got the error message about auto proxy settings at the start and had to select manual again. _________________ David |
