The quest 2 will be released in Europe but we do not have a release date yet. The quest 2 has a poi loader but this is not supported with the quest.

POI Loader allows you to load custom points of interest into your unit. The
input files can be downloaded from the internet or you can create your own.
With POI Loader, you can configure the unit to alert you when you are within
a certain distance of a point or if you are driving over a certain speed
near a point; perfect to warn you about upcoming schools zones and redlight
and speed cameras. The unit will also allow you to search for and navigate
to the loaded points of interest.

So, the Quest 2 will have POI alerts but it sounds like Garmin have no plans to retrofit the feature to the Quest. Surely the two Quests are fundamentally the same hardware, only differing in memory sizes. Why can't us loyal Garmin owners have the POI alerts too? Evil or Very Mad

Garmin's software which allows speed camera alerts is called "POI Loader". If you are interested in seeing this feature then let Garmin know about it.

I you are looking at buying a GPS model which doesn't already support POI Loader then contact Garmin via this link:

http://www.garmin.com/contactUs/salesSupport.jsp

If you are an existing Garmin customer and you have a GPS unit that you would like to see a software upgrade to allow you to use use POI Loader, then contact them via this link:

This is the reply from Garmin ,fast ,but not much use.

Dear Peter

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am not aware of any plans to release a POI loader for the StreetPilot
2610.

Garmin are now aware of how much these features are wanted by UK consumers, which is why they are updating the existing C320/330 to accept full postcode searches.

Whilst it would be nice to have these features on the older models like the Quest and 2610, I would understand if Garmin chose not to bother.
After all, they would prefer us all to buy a new model!

Lets hope Garmin value their existing users enough!

It is obviously a standard response, here is the reply I received:

Dear Karl

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am not aware of any plans to introduce a POI loader for the Quest.

A bit of a poor showing to not introduce features that can very easily be added. It is all well and good looking after the new customers but existing Garmin users are their customers of the future, possibly....

I'm sure they would! We need to keep asking them so they know that people want the feature retrofitted to existing GPS units. Garmin have been pretty good with their firmware updates in recent years so hopefully the will make the effort to add these features and retain a bit of goodwill.

Looks like their answers are getting a bit more sophisticated...

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe Support.
Unfortunately the poi loader is not compatible with the quest. It is only
compatible with the newer units.

...and...
The only difference is the quest 2 has all the mapping installed and
supports a poi loader.

...and...
The quest would need a hardware change to support this feature
I guess there's only so many ways to say "it can't be done"

It would be possible if they added a proximity alert for existing or user waypoints. Preferably a system that would work with a transparent overlay as well.

I don't belive that it requires a hardware change. My old Garmin GPS-V supported proximity alerts, it could only handle 10 POI's though. Crying or Very sad

Keep pestering them, folks.

I would have thought that all it would need is a software and possibly firmware upgrade rather than a hardware one Question

This was Garmin UK's response to my request for a Quest POI loader

Quote:
Hi,

Thank you for your email.
This is something we are looking into at the moment but that is all I can
say at this time.

This was the reply I got from Garmin:

Quote:
Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

In regard to your email, the older units are not designed and cannot hold
the POI loader thus why it has been released for the newer units which all
use a new type of mapping (3D). I would be very surprised if the POI loader was re-released for the older units as the cannot hold it but if it were the Quest would most likely be the unit which it would be created for.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

I think we should keep sending in the emails - there seems to be a slight softening in the reply?? or just wishful thinking!!

Cheers,
Dunc
