Globalsat BT-308 Power supply

I want to wire my unit into the car rather than use a cigarette lighter lead - will it take 12v or if not, where do I get a suitable step-down transformer from?

According to the spec published in the BT 308 review on this site, it needs a 5V supply so no, it will not take 12V. What you need is a DC to DC converter, not a step-down transformer.
