Hi
I'm using a 1gb Sandisk SD card, with "Made in China" emblazoned on it. Works perfectly with the GO, despite postings in various forums advising the use of Japanese only cards. Great value from ebay at only £37.
Incidently,
1) Is there a table anywhere showing the transfer rates of "standard" SD cards, which do not claim "high speed" transfer rates?
2) Can anyone categorically advise if a faster card makes any noticeable difference to GO performance, or do they either work, or not? |

Why do you need a 1Gb Sd card. Why not just get a card big enough for the map of country your driving in. I use a 256Mb card, and it serves my needs, with memory to spare.

Thanks for your reply, but you haven't answered either question.
The Sandisk 1gb card that I am using seems to perform just as well as the original, and has not corrupted any data.
I asked the questions, not because of any problem, or degraded performance, but just out of technical interest.
Incidentally, the web site you referred to has not been updated for a very long time, and contains obsolete information. I would welcome information from an up to date site.

That's easy to say for UK users, but driving in Europe you can easily cover three or four countries in a weekend... or even a day! |

| Agreed...especially if you're near a border. If I drive South from here to spend a weekend in the Alps, I'll be nipping in and out of Germany, Austria and Italy all the time. |

Is 1 GB a big SD card?
I want GB map and major western Europe and perhaps a few 1000 POI`s
What size would suffice? Are the cheaper makes OK? |

I tend to agree with G-N. You can't navigate (apart from using MRE) across country borders from one map to another; you have to 'switch maps'.
So it's hardly anymore trouble switching cards; you don't loose all your stuff, if one card goes belly-up and the price of the lower memory cards has been tumbling. Bit of an accident, but I ended up with a Kingston 512Mb card for £18!!  I've got Benelux, France, MRE and West Germany on one card, and ~33Mb free, and I've yet to load Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Austria and most of Germany on the other card.
Plenty of free space for POI's.

Doesn't the "Alps" map do this? If not, it's a bit pointless..... |

Depends how you have them installed. I have Alps installed... but that only covers southern germany. So if Sniff wants to drive from Munich to Hamburg he can use the Germany map... but if he's heading south he can use the Alps map. Ok, you have to switch in TTG itself, but it's much easier than carrying lots of little SD cards and swapping them over like that. If you drive from western Switzerland into France, they are on separate maps.
The fact that you can't plan routes across separate maps is a bit of a PITA, but that's life!
Just IMO. |
