But I've got that on my TT-GO with version 4.40 software!

I've also wondered what the extra 0.02 in version number gives you in added functions; anyone know??

I doubt that... Here's the list from the TomTom support site

What's new or improved in TomTom GO 4.42?
Points Of Interest (POI) management:

* Create your own POI category
o Add locations to your own category
+ by using a point on the map
+ by specifying a location
o Plug-in a POI category from other TomTom users (including from TomTom PocketPC/Palm users)
o Add locations to the plugged-in category
* Edit your POI category, or your plugged-in category
o Modify the locations in your category
o Delete locations in your category
* Delete your POI category, or your plugged-in category
o Delete a plugged-in category
* Use your POI, or plugged-in, category in the application as build-in POI category
o Enable/disable display to map browser or moving map
o Search by proximity to a location and/or by name
o Turn into destination, departure, via, home, favourite, other POI
* Option to get a warning when you are close to a POI. The warning will be given based on the specified POI category, distance and sound.

Language and voices support:

* Option to select your application in Portuguese, Norwegian or Finnish

Other:

* Includes the Windows 98 USB Driver for owners of a PC running Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE
* Brief display of a volume slider added when touching the repeat instruction area (left on the status bar) for hearing the instruction of the next maneuver
* New option to use a manually specified point on the map as a via (i.e. waypoint for the calculated route)
* Maximum brightness level of the display increased
* Fix for the clock to stay more precise
* Several quality changes and improvements

[quote="lbendlin"]I doubt that...

DocL is correct.

Version 4.40 did support Custom POIs and POI proximity alert.

Version 4.42 corrected a couple of bugs.

When TT Go first came out it had version 4.21, then an update came in July 2004 to version 4.38,which still didn't have Custom POIs and POI proximity alert.

Then end of August 2004, version 4.40 was released, several weeks later version 4.42 showed up.

I've got both versions. v4.42 was supplied on SD card, and v4.40 on CD!

There's no obvious (to me) difference in functionality BUT, on my TTG, v4.40 frequently locked up after turn-on - refusing to get any further than displaying the hands on the screen. I've never had that with v4.42

My notion therefore is that v4.42 is a bug fix.

[With reference to the posts listing changes as per the TomTom website, I believe that these are the changes you get when you upgrade to v4.42 from a pre-4.4 version, NOT from v4.40 itself. When I was experiencing problems I tried to find out the diferences between v4.40 and v4.42 and couldn't find this explicitly stated]

The 'Lock up' experience was mine as well, although I had upgraded to 4.40 and the TTG re-booted several times enroute. Since going 4.42 I've had no trouble (touch wood, hands free of course).

I was highly confused at first, because I bought a bigger (third party) SD card and installed the application and maps on the new card from the CD.

When I got the lock-up problem, I thought it was something to do with my card - and didn't immediately realise that I was running a different version of the application.

[After all, TomTom wouldn't supply 2 different versions in the same package, would they?! Wouldn't they, hell!]

Once I'd ignored the application on the CD and copied v4.42 from one card to the other, I had no more problems. I thus concluded - and still hold - that there's something distinctly buggy about v4.40

I originally upgraded to 4.40 on the 128Mb card. It worked OK at that time.

When I got a bigger card I transfered the whole card to the PC. Fitted new card and transfered everything back. It worked OK for 4 weeks before 'the hiccup'. The 'bug' was very random in its appearance.

I upgraded to 4.42 2 weeks ago. OK so far

The symptoms experienced by different people seem to vary a bit - but I think it's the same bug!

Typically, this is how I experienced it: The first time TTG was turned on after inserting the card, it would read the card and then freeze - displaying the hands. The on/off button had no effect - and it could only be turned off by doing a reset with a paperclip. When turned back on after a reset, it would eventually display the map - but it took a long time relative to v4.42

Apparently some people experienced funny symptoms during an actual journey. I never used v4.40 in the car - so I can't comment on this aspect.

Yep. General rule of thumb is as follows...

a.b.c (or a.bc)

a = Major release (new features / change in the way the software operates)
b = Revision number (single or small features added, or bug fixes)
c = Patch level (bug fix only)
