Hi
My tom tom go will not connect to my pc .There is a yellow exclamation mark in device manager in the ide/atapi section and I also get :-" The driver installation file for this device is missing a neccessary entry.Inf file written for 95 or later" It connects fine to my brother's pc and I have now run out of ideas although I didn't have many to start with!
Cheers and any help would be gladly received Confused

You don't say which Operating System you are using. Anything after 98SE has all the drivers built in.

Under XP the TTG shows up under USB Serial Bus Controllers as a 'Mass Storage Device'.

The IDE/Atapi controllers are for Hard Drives, etc. I don't think the two interact, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hi
Thank you for replying.I am running XP and I thought the TTG should come up in the usb in device manager but it does come in under the Ide Atapi bit again with the yellow exclamation mark. Maybe I have deleted some inf file in the past but again I really don't know and if I have I wouldn't know how to put it right . I did contact TTG a few days ago but I still have no solution.
Any help is great as I seem to have spent hours and days trying to find what is wrong!
The TTg works fine but I can only download from someone elses pc .
I really appreciate your time
Cheers Crying or Very sad

Do you have any other USB devices connected, ie. printer or scanner, and are these working OK?

Do you have any other usb devices that are working? If you do, then double-check "my computer" and you should see a new drive listed (it may not appear in the task bar).
Also, I had trouble with the lead not connecting securely into the TomTom unit, so its worth unplugging and making sure of the connection.
Sorry if you have tried the above, but its worth eliminating the obvious.

Hi
Again a big thank you for your time.
Yes I do have a printer connected to a usb and it works fine...My scanner is more of a nuisance but with a bit of tinkering it usually works..It is a mustek bear paw and I can't wait to get rid of it!
Also my digital camera and mp3 player work fine from the same usb port on the front of my pc!
I have unplugged a reconnected a few times but still no joy.
Any help is really welcome
Cheers Confused

When the TTG is connected and switched on does it show the map or the TomTom logo? If it shows the map there must be a communication between it and the PC. Have you tried the USB plugged in at the back of the PC?

Are you absolutely sure there is no drive showing in "my computer"?
I wasn't too sure myself how the Tomtom would show up, but I think it showed up as a "device with removable storage"
I know you said it connected to your brother's PC, so if he is running XP too, then you know where to look, and I apologise for stating the obvious.
Bottom line is, if other USB devices are working, then the TomTom should show up as far as I know.

Another thought, is the Tomtom on mains power?

Hi Smile
The TTG doesn't show the map when connected to my pc just the logo then a picture of a pc ! I have just tried TTG plugged into the back and the same thing happens.
TTG doesn't show up in my computer at all only as an error in device manager, It isn't plugged into the mains.
It says the drivers aren't installed but I thought as a plug and play device it didn't need them
Your efforts are really appreciated

Delete the device in device manager. ( one with the error)
Unplug the usb wire (at the computer end).
Power the TTG with the mains/charger lead.
reconnect the usb lead to the computer.
recheck "my computer" for a new drive.

Any luck?

Hi
That allowed me to get as far as the new hardware wizard and then the installation wouldn't complete as it said"access denied" Your new hardware may not work properly.
The installation seemed to stop at about the system drivers section and I have had that before when it has said there is a driver installation file missing a neccessary entry!
Many thanks again and I am still travelling hopefully as taking a mallet to it all is probably not the best idea. :o

Have you tried re-booting your computer with TTG connected (and powered from the mains)?

Just occasionally, XP will find devices at boot-up which it doesn't find if you connect them later.

Your Windows installation may be corrupted.
Try running System File Checker (SFC)
Click "Start", click "run" then type "sfc /scannow" (no quotes & space after sfc) into the "open" box, and then click "ok"

Then delete the device as before & try reinstalling it.

Another thought, make sure the SD card is in the TTG. You could eject it and put it back in, to make sure it is in properly.

The post about re-booting is a good one! Delete the problem device first though, and then re-boot as suggested with the ttg powered up & connected to the usb port.
