I've just received a TTG as an early Christmas present, would be out there experimenting with it now if somebody hadn't gone to work with MY keys in their pocket!
I'm concerned that when I do get it into the car that my Citroën windscreen is going to be one of those athermic ones - is it true that some areas of the glass are better than others?
If an external antenna is necessary, how do you get around this with a soft top? |

If you have a soft top you should get a good signal! It's the metal roof and the metallic coated windscreen that give the problems. |

The external antenna is so called because it's 'external' to the TTG unit. It works best if it's outside the car, stuck to the roof but still works well if located at a suitable point inside. I've got one inside the tailgate of a Scenic, which has the athermic screen problem and it works brilliantly. We also have a soft top and don't bother with an external in that, but the TTG is actually better in the Scenic. |

Ahhh, it works beautifully! I'm so pleased with it. Well, as far as the reception is concerned anyway, perfect 5 bars. I just can't find a flat enough part of the windscreen for that suction thing to hold onto, it felt solid but kept falling off when in motion. Ditto the dashboard, it's finally mounted slap bang in the middle of the dash onto that sticky circle - not fantastically secure and a bit of an eyesore.
What I could do with is something like that disc, but thicker maybe - that could cope with a slight curve.
Best Christmas present I've ever had though. :D |

Have a look at the TomTom website; they're advertising an alternative mounting kit with clips that go into the air vents etc. I don't think anyone's yet clapped eyes on one, but as soon as they appear i'm sure someone will post a review. |

Making the suction cup stick longer is better if you lick the suction cup, press hard against a flat area of the windscreen and then push the lever down to lock into place. You will find that vibration and adverse heat or cold air will make the suction cup pull away from the windscreen, so to avoid this try not to put too much heat or cold air onto the windscreen, try where possible to direct air through your vents. Also try to adjust the suction cup height so that your PDA/device rests on the dashboard, that way this will stop vibration going through the arm and avoid it losing grip. |

I've had a look at that alternative 'goose neck' mount on the website, it comes with airvent clips but I doubt these will be much good to me personally. Mine are round (sort of Ka style ) and won't even support one of those air freshener things. I'll try moistening the suction thing as suggested, do like the look of that bendy mount though.
How on earth do you manage with it on your door window?! |

Yes, the vent mount wouldn't hold on those vents.
Another good option is to make sure that the windscreen is very clean on the inside. Usually using an alcohol swab to clear the area where the suction cup is going to go will help. |

Put a small drop of washing up liquid on the suction cup before sticking it to the clean windscreen.

Thanks for the link to your pics - yes the dash is very very similar. Couple of (sorry if stupid) questions:
How did you stick the TTG to that little cup thing and is it still fairly portable (for use in other cars, for example)?
Your antenna is exactly where (what I think is) the rain sensor thing on my windscreen, the dark area on this pic, there is no signal there. Did you try other parts of the windscreen for reception or was that just the flattest part?

Thanks for the washing up liquid tip, how permanent is it - I mean, is it still easy to remove once applied? |
