1 GB SD card - can I partition it?

Continued problems with 3.07T, 3.07 GPS on an XDA2 still point to the SD card causing trouble.
I have defragged and repaired the card and hard and soft set the PDA.

The trouble only happens when traffic downloads kick in and the no. of incidents load then freeze.
TT3 then locks up and I exit.
TT3 then won't reload.
Going straight to settings>system>storage card I get a lock-up or the 1GB card shows that it is totally full.

If I stop the Traffic donwload then TT3 continues with my route.

I assumed that TT3 used the SD card for accessing my maps only, however it has added some files to it:

TMC cache
TMCCODES
TMCPATHS
TRAFFIC
POI
SETUP
CLINE
CNAME
CNODEFACES
MAPINFO
Checkpoint

on top of my GB map and POIs. Are these other files meant to be there?

I found on an obscure O2 page that the XDA2 supports SD cards up to 512 mb and thought that this may be the main issue?
If so then would partitioning it into two 512mb sizes work and what PDA software to use?
Otherwise I'll have to sell on the card and get a 512mb instead.

Since d/loading 3.07T and using the 1gb card (both stupidly done at the same time) I haven't had a proper journey finished by TT3 yet in 2 months.

Yes most of them are part of the TomTom installation. My setup shows FACES not CNODEFACES. Not sure about SETUP - there is not one in my map folder.

The Checkpoint file is the OV2 file into which your recorded POI will be saved.

Can't help you on partitioning your SD card.

You can't partition cards, and even if you could, you wouldn't have any kind of boot loader to be able to choose which partition you were to use, so it would be a little 'froogle'.

AFAIK there shouldn't be an issue with size, if the XDA's have a 'proper' SD card reader in them, it shouldn't be an issue and they should be able to support any upward size.

I suspect the problem is more down to the quality of SD card you have purchased, and you may need to re-think and re-look at a more expensive/quality SD card -or- see if there are any ROM updates for the XDA that fix SD card issues.

Thanks Dave.
The card is an IPROC type, made in Taiwan and cost £50.
I've got a Kingston 512 Mb coming next week so I'll see what that does.
I tried the latest ROM upgrade from O2 last week but that didn't cure it.
Seems like the 1 GB card will be on the long boat to HK soon.

The annoying thing about all my TT woes are that I just have an acquired mistrust over the TT quality of hard & software, that I don't know what to blame.

Please post the markings on the back of the 1GB SD card.

If, when looking at the back of the card with the contacts at the top, you have a portrait set of markings that consists just of a letter and eleven numbers in rather small print, that's a style of markings that has signified a bad card every time they've been reported on the forums.

I had one of those cards, branded Integral "High Speed", and I could get it to break fairly easily in a card reader or my iPAQ hx4700.

That's not the same style of markings as the troublesome type of card I was thinking about, but I think I've seen mention of that type of markings in another troublesome card recently.

I probably ought to be more disciplined about collecting information on troublesome memory cards mentioned in the forums. It's no longer possible reliably to identify manufacturers from markings, as there's so many new manufacturers with styles of markings unrecognised to me. However, simple correlation sorts out most storage card mysteries.

I have the advantage when testing cards personally that I have a known good (branded Integral but made by Panasonic) 512MB SD card. If my system starts being troublesome with a card under test and behaves well with the Panasonic card, it's a fairly safe bet the card is to blame.

I've got another XDA2 with TT3 turning up (my wife keeps borrowing mine and is very impressed - apart from TT3 never working).
I'll then have two PDAs and several SD cards to test it all on - looks like I'll have a fun Christmas Smile
