GPS are banned and you get fined on the spot if caught in Spain.

http://www.idealspain.com/Pages/Information/DrivingSpain.htm

Have a look under "New Regulations"

How many knew of this "Law",

Surely they can't be serious???

I am not too surprised. Fiddling around with a GPS Navi Computer trying to set a route whilst you are driving is just as bad as trying to use a mobile phone whilst driving, and that is banned in most European countries now.

It does pose some interesting questions though...many car manufacturers offer GPS Navi as standard (including Seat) so it would be interesting to see if they had stopped offering this as an option in Spain. Anyone from Spain care to comment?

The Babelfish translation of the official Spanish words are:

RADAR INTERCEPT RECEIVERS, PROHIBITED the installation in the vehicles of mechanisms, systems or any directed instrument are not allowed to elude the monitoring of the traffic agents (detection of radars). As well as to signal to other conductors with this purpose. (Article 18,3)

The INSTRUMENTS WITH SCREEN ARE PROHIBITED Is prohibited the use, by the conductor with the vehicle in movement, of devices that can distract their attention while it leads, such as screens with access to Internet, monitors of television and reproducers of video or DVD. Except necessary monitors for maneuvers and device GPS (Art. 18,1) Before: It was not regulated.

This doesn't sound like a GPS ban, but using one to elude a speed camera might be risky.

GPS is NOT banned in Spain. This came out last year, a freind who lives there checked this out for me. SatNav is allowed as it is considered to aid the safety of drivers however I will check back with him & get confirmation over the weekend

This regulation simply states that 'operation' of any device that contains a screen by the driver is forbidden whilst the vehicle is in motion. It does not preclude the 'use' of a navigation system.

That's a common sense rule and all factory fit systems lock out any buttons whilst the vehicle is in motion anyway.

Thanks for clearing this up.

Zuke's translated spanish law explained it.

Sorry for any confusion it may have caused. had me worried for a while there, espeically when thir police officers carry "Smith and Wessen" revolvers.

I know what you mean, the Guardia Civil aren't well known for the friendly manner!

Mind you considering many Seat's (the cars not the chairs!) now come with colour screen SatNav the Spanish Government would be shooting themselves in the foot if they banned in-car GPS entirely!

Is that so? My carminat (Renault) was always fully operational. Moving or not moving. What do you mean?

Ok, strike 'all factory fit systems' and replace with 'most or some factory fit systems' Smile Certainly those fitted to Ford, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Land Rover, Audi, Volkswagen and Seat have limited access to controls whilst in motion.

Ford, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Landrover = Ford

Audi, VW, Seat = VW

Only two manufacturers there!

Yup you're correct! Add GM and PSA and that's pretty much all the non Far-East manufacturers!

and Toyota.

I have to say it is a bit irritating when you have a passenger (or are the passenger) in the car with you and you cannot change the sat nav destination etc whilst moving.

When manufacturers decide that something must be prohibited because it is unsafe, they only look at one dimension of a problem forgetting that there are many perfectly safe scenarios where the action should be possible.
