I did 28K miles last tax year and used a Peugeot OEM system throughout.

I ve recently changed my car to one without an OEM system and shopped around for alternatives - I discounted a dedicated in car solution because of price and worries about fitment and I also considered a PDA solution but I wouldnt have used its full capabilities.

I finally settled on a TomTom Go which so far has been awesome. I was initially worried about update speed and graphics quality alongside the level of detail that could be fitted on 101 mb.

These fears havent yet materialised with graphics and route updates zipping along - quite why I needed a separate CD player with the old VDO system I dont know!

The suction cups work well - I have a minor gripe about the length of the arm - it could be longer. I have an Audi Cab with a very big dash and I cant quite reach it within arms length. In mitigation the slope of the windscreen doesnt help either.

The speaker is loud and clear though if you change voice sets, the terminology changes too. I ve picked an american voice as its clearer though it tends to use "rotary" rather than roundabout.

If anyone is thinking of doing an aftermarket kit - I d suggest a broad flat rubber base with porting to redirect the sound - that way I could loose the glass mount and increase volume.

One handy tip - the suction is very strong, its tricky to flip off - carry a lollipop stick to gently pop the suction.

Thanks for POIs - been useful already! Any potential for new voices? More bass and less sybilance dials out round noise I think.

And another benefit if you are a company car user is the tax implications. An OEM install as an option typically adds anything from £1000 - £2500 to the cost of a car and this is taken into account when calculating your tax liability.

Not only do you end up paying more tax but at the end of the lease period you lose the SatNav anyway. With a transportable unit you pay no additional tax and get to keep it!
