I've split the .chk file ok, but the .ogg files are corrupted. Ogginfo gives the following:

Processing file "100.ogg"...

New logical stream (#1, serial: 00000785): type vorbis
Warning: Hole in data found at approximate offset 4500 bytes. Corrupted ogg.
Warning: EOS not set on stream 1
Vorbis stream 1:
Total data length: 0 bytes
Playback length: 0m:00s
Average bitrate: -1.#IND00 kbps

Anyone any clues?

Ive managed to split the ogg files as described earlier by someone
(the easy part.. using viftool.exe)

Using a program called "4Musics Ogg to Wave converter" I have established that the files are indeed 22050Hz Mono, but they have varying
bit rates from say 40kbps (eg 300.ogg) to one that is 122kbps (AHFerry.ogg) all are 16 bit.

Haven't yet managed to convert to wav.
Anyone got any further with this?

P.S. Still waiting for tomtom to respond to e-mail. seem to have gone quiet on everyone asking how to add customised voice files. Think maybe they have dropped a marketing clanger. what do you think?

Everyone e-mail them, lets try and find out whats going on....

Well, tonight I made a custom voice file that mostly works.

Used audacity to record and create the ogg files which I just gradually overwrote the extracted ones. Reassembled and (as Homer says on my arriving at destination clip) WOOHOO!

But,

It sometimes misses out certain files when stringing 2 or more together. For example, it will say "at the end of the road .. .. .. ." but when you get to the end it does say "turn right". Sometimes yards are missing, other times not.

Much more work to do, but is looking good!

Right! Got it all working. Now I'm no creative, so I've just done it so you cool creative people can make some great voice files....

1. Unzip the viftools (http://ghostwheel.de/viftool.zip) into (say) c:\viftools

2. Copy Tim's files from the TTG CD to the viftools folder (engm.vif and data04.chk).

3. Go to start, run and enter cmd

4. type cd\viftools

5. type viftool split engm.vif

6. Open windows explorer to get a list of ogg files in c:\viftools

7. Run Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/windows.php) and set the project sampling to 22050 (bottom left hand corner). Very important to change this setting every time you do something with audacity. Record a single long run of all the commands.

TIP: RbBack is "Enter the roundabout". For the UK, I find it much better to record Ahead as "In".

8. Select all and apply a bass boost of 15db at 300 Hz (if like me you use a crap mic).

9. Select the individual saying. Goto file, export selection as ogg vorbis, and double click the existing ogg file we extracted earlier. That's the only reason to extract them!

10. Repeat for the whole lot! You can't use any extracted ogg's, as they belong to tomtom and are also specially corrupted.

11. Back to the command prompt and type viftool join 99 "English - Andrew (GB)" cusm.vif

12. Finally, copy the two new files data99.chk and cusm.vif to the root folder of your TTG.

Here is my first, experimental, effort. http://www.apotts.plus.com/voice2.zip

I look forward to being directed by a Geordie, Homer Simpson, or whatever!

Hope this helps,

Andrew

Nice work pottsy,

I'll have to give your method a go when I get back from our Holiday.

It's this kind of thing that these Forums were made for :-D

Dave

p.s. Thanks must also go to GhostWheel, Altavista, and my school German teacher in that order ;-)

how do i play back existing (or your voice files) so that i can simulate each file in terms of words. Can't gbet audacity to play your ogg files once i have extracted them from your .chk .vif files.

Any ideas? or do you have a text list of each voice command so i know what to record for my own.

cheers

Tried it out and it works great! So, back to a question I have posted in another thread; anyone tried this on Palm? TomTom seem to have changed the way the voice files are loaded. There is no .vif file, for example... Guess hey don't fancy Geeks like us???

Finally had a response from tomtom today...and i quote

"Option to load your own (or from others) voice files onto the GO is not possible. This was a misspelling in the text .

Excuse us for the inconvience .

We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

They seem to think its not possible and they make the damn product!!!

Interesting, today I got slightly different text from Tomtom support:
"... the option does not work due to the fact that this function is not incorporated in the menu..."

Even more interesting when you look at the US site and see:

TomTom US Site wrote:

Mike
Regarding the customized voices, I understood from the TT Support that user defined customized voices are not included in 4.4.
Regarding, the US part of - Tomtom Go is successfull in Europe but not in the US. Customers there are complaing about TeleAtlas maps accuracy. TT is doing everyting to sell more, so they came up with Tomtom GO plus, where TTG is sold with 1Gbyte card so that the whole US maps are installed.
Regards
Avi

Hi avi,

The version of TomTom GO released in the USA is exactly the same as for us in Europe. They have packaged it with the full US mapset on a 1Gb SD card for convienience only, the software is identical in all other respects.

TT support may specify that they do not support customised voices, but they support the changing of voice files, and if you look at the link they state thate these voice files are for the GO (not user customisable just voice files)
