Hi!

I just tried to use my old Trimble PathFinder Pocket cable-connected GPS receiver with tomtom with no success. I wonder if any of you have experienced the same problems.

Since the GPS model is not included in the list of pre-configured GPS receiver, I decided to go directly to the NMEA drivers.

I have configured my GPS, using Trimble's pathfinder controller to produce NMEA output (speed 4800 or 9600) and selected the corresponding NMEA 0183 v2 (4800 / 9600) driver in tomtom.

In any case, I get the green light of my receiver on (the receiver has been awakened by tomtom) but no satellites at all.

On the contrary, if I use the trimble's software directly (pathfinder controller) I get satellites and positions after a few seconds.

Has any of you any ideas about how to integrate this receiver with tomtom? I'm about to travel and would like to have it working!!!

Thanks alot!!!

Hi traveller2000,

Welcome to the forum.

Could you please give us some more details? E.g.:
PDA make, model, and OS
TomTom version
TomTom GPS Driver version

Could you also update your profile for your country of location? Thumbs Up

Regards,

Hi! Sorry for the lack of details!

Here they are:

Compaq iPaq 3950
Microsoft Pocket PC 3.0.11171 (Pocket PC 2000???)
64 Mb
Processor: Intel PXA250

Tomtom Navigator 2.24.2 (363) Spanish

I have no idea about how to obtain the version for the GPS driver. The only thing that comes to my mind is that when I select the NMEA driver, a string reading NMEA 0183v2 4800 (or 9600) appears on the screen.

And yes, I'm about to update my profile...

Thanks!!!

Hi!

Could the driver version be V2.08 291/378 ?

This string appears in the GPS information screen, where you can see a map of the world (precisely, just under Australia)

Hi,

Thanks for the extra information, and yes GPS 2.08 sounds right.

If you’ve got your GPS to produce NMEA 4800, then you need to go to your TomTom GPS driver, tap on the GPS tab to get the world map.

Next tap on the box on the top left hand corner so that the tick is removed. You can then select “NMEA 0183v2 4800” and “Serial Cable on COMx” where COMx is likely to be COM1 but it may be another COM.

If that works then tick the box in the top left hand corner to stop the values from changing.

You may also want to ensure that you GPS receiver is set to use map Datum WGS84.

Regards,

Thanks, Robert, for your comments.

I had already taken all the actions you suggest in your previous post even before opening this thread... and, as I say, with no success at all. I have NO satellites, never.

The only thing I think that might affect the relationship between tomtom and my pathfinder pocket is the set of NMEA data that the receiver is sending. Somewhere in the pathfinder controller software is possible to check or uncheck different NMEA tags that the receiver will send when obtaining a position. Since I'm no expert in NMEA I checked all of them. At first, only one was checked.

Could you or anybody else confirm if this might affect tomtom?

Moreover, besides this pathfinder controller, there is another application using the GPS receiver installed in my pocket pc (it is a home development, but I'm not the developer... the guy who did the work left the company a few months ago Sad ) Well, this application uses also NMEA and works very well...

Thanks in any case.

Jose.
