Hi
Does anyone have either of the above (or the C) mounted on a motorcycle. I am intending to use my GPS on an off road bike (Honda XR 400). I have looked at a picture on the Ram mounts website of the 60cs on a BMW. It looks WAY too big for the bike.
Has anyone got any one used one of these on a bike, if so what do they think.
thanks

Yeah, I use a GPS-V on my CBR600 with a RAM mount pretty much identical to the one in the gallery on the 650GS featured on the RAM-UK website. I use the GPS in landscape mode, I don't know if the 76 or 60 units do landscape or only portrait?
I don't find that the mount takes up too much room, they have two swiveling balls so you can adjust it to almost any angle. It's not a big problem.
The ones shown in the gallery have the mount sticking straight out so the GPS as far away from the bars as possible. You can turn the mount around so that the unit is almost resting on the bars. This is probably the safest option, so it's less likely to get clobbered if you have a crash.
Touratech do mounting systems are also available (albeit reassuringly expensive), I am not sure if they have one for the newer Garmins yet. They seem to be more geared to the Paris-Dakar types.
Good luck! |

Ahh, Touratech mounts:

If you are in London then I think Bracken Motorcycles do these mounts. It is quite likely that a few of the people who sponsor this website sell them too. Check out some of the links! |

Having the mono screen version of the 76C (76S), I can say this is a good handheld GPS, but if you're really looking for navigation without voice, then I would go for the GPSMap 60C/CS.
Attach it with a RAM mount, you'll find a lot of galleries from bikers over at http://www.ram-mount-uk.com
Also, if you want to talk to someone at Ram Mount UK, ask for Steve and tell him Dave sent you (I'm sure he'll curse me for saying that!). |

Check out GPS Warehouse, they have them here in the UK. They are only about £20-30 quid - I don't know if you would really save much on Ebay.

I also have an XR400 and have been using my GPSMAP 60C with a ram handlebar mount for about 3 weeks both on and off tarmac and have had no problems so far.
I would also look into hardwiring your GPS into the bike, which i am just about to do. Kits for this can be bought from David Lambeth in Kent. |

We'll have to start an XR club! I've had an Etrex on a RAM mount on my XR for about 8 months, and can speak highly for the RAM system's strength. I've got standard bars though, don't know how it might fit on tapers like Renthall Fatbars.
The only flaw I did find was that the RAM cradle for the Etrex isn't an absolutely rigid fit. There's no way it will ever come out of there, but it can move very fractionally (about half a mm) in the cradle, which over the months has worn four annoying little marks into the case of the Etrex. I might glue a thin piece of wadding in there to take up the slack.
But the rubber ball mount is amazingly strong. When I first fitted it I positioned it too far forward and the front brake line snagged the mount down with it on the rebound stroke. Most embarrasing. |

I wonder if Dave would consider creating a forum for discussion of GPS on bikes. :D |

xrchris and mupp,
I am now ready to buy my GPS, I have to decide between the 60cs and the Vista. I initially intended to get the vista, which will probably do everything I need, but my fund raising (selling stuff I didnt need on eBay) went much better than i thought so i can easily afford the 60cs.
I am just worried that the 60cs will look too big and possibly out of place on the bars on the XR. As you have both models between you can you please give your thoughts.....
Cheers

We're always willing to consider the opening of new forums if there's enough requirement for them. |

The 60cs wouldn't look too big on an XR, with a handlebar mount you'll be able to site it nicely behind the front number plate and still be clear of the front brake line. Some of the Rally riders fit all kinds of junk up there. Here's a couple of sites showing similar mounts:

Ooops I've just noticed that Skippy already mentioned the UK site, sorry.
(Why can't I edit my posts?) |

I have to agree there is plenty of room to fit my 60c in using the ram handlebar mount. :D |

Thanks for the info and links.
I took the plunge, bought the 60cs and a ram mount. So to answer my original question, No, the 60cs does not look too big on the XR.
I used a new type of RAM mount which is a handlebar wrap around with ball on top. This means it sticks out less. It seems to be very secure. If anyone is interested, here are some pics:
