Are these signs /devices speed cameras or just a friendly warning to keep to the 30 mph limit . They are in several villages around Barmouth Gwynedd area including Arthog on the A493 . Lets know

They are just warning signs to let you know that you are going too fast. I havn't come across one with a fixed cam.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I also thought they were just a reminder to keep your speed down, but these appeared suddenly in an 30 mph area . Also there were no road stepped markings which usually accompany camera locations.

They show up alot round the Basingstoke area and are moved around quite often. They seem to place them where they feel there is a speeding problem and its not unusual to see a police speed check placed at the same location a few weeks later.

This seems to suggest a recent emphasis on safety measures, rather than just revenue gathering. I've seen a couple on entry to a speed camera zone, and they seem to have a good effect - if anyone is caught speeding, or has to slam their brakes on, even after passing one of these, it's only themselves to blame!

We have a couple of these near us and they are wind and solar powered so must be pretty much cost-free in terms of on-going maintenance.

When they first started putting these up they made the mistake of showing your actual speed - boy-racers then took it as a challenge :D

What annoys me about these is because they are not for prosecution they don't need to be calibrated. One of my local ones is triggered at 30mph on my speedo (about 27mph on the satnav) so even when you are within the limit you are reminded to slow down!!

I've noticed that too but they do seem to be effective in reminding drivers of the speed limit and provided that's all they ever do I can live with them.

Have seen several now, we have a couple in the Northolt area and one of them will flash 30 when speedo is showing 25!!
That just defeats the object I think. One is outside a school fair enough, I suppose.
But people won't pay any attention if they know they are warning at speeds well below the limit.

I would say this is right - the vast majority of journeys will be guided by a speedo, not a satnav (even satnav owners may not always use their units on local/familiar jouneys). So that is what people would be driving by unless they have the knowledge we proud GPSers have. And if I didn't know better, like I guess most drivers, I would be querying a display which DIDN'T warn me when I thought I was doing 33 by my speedo.

But

if that's the car speedo, does seem overcautious and perhaps a bit self-defeating.

yep BigPerk,

My car speedo - it shows about 2mph below what my satnav does.
I've thought it was pinging cars behind me, soooo.
Sunday morning on way to work at 5.45am. Only car on the road and I've sneaked up on it at 20mph and it has still gone off.
Been thinking of going to the local neighbourhood watch meeting to complain. if they are going to put them up, then make them meaningful.
We've had local 20mph limits on side roads and extra signs for bus lanes put in over the last 18 months, and these speed reminders have been part of the system.
I'd rather have a 30 mph and loads of coppers out there with speed guns.

We have quite a few of these round our area as opposed to cameras,They seem quite acurute in relation to your speedometer but can be triggered only slightly above, therefore seem effective when installed but tend to lose their efectiveness after, probably due to not allowing the same tolerance as speed cameras, IMHO they they would be more help for safety than cameras if they had the same tolerence.

The ones in Spain are sometimes linked to a set of traffic lights about 20M further along the road. If you do not reduce your speed, the traffic lights turn red and hold you there for 15-20 seconds. Occasionally, police hide out of sight waiting for people who jump the red lights.

Most people are aware of this and creep up to the flashing warning signs well below the speed limit so as not to trigger the red lights. Seems to work well in reducing road speed.
