Alright, already mentioned this on another post. Got a new device last week, but during about 24 hours of driving i seem to have only received 10 minutes of TMC broadcasts. I've tried different settings, including trying to lock onto Classic FM only, still no joy. Extremely frustrating as this was one of the main reasons for getting the device.
Anyone have any suggestions how to improve reception? I've looked up y-splitters but am not sure if these will work as TMC is picked up through the USB charger cable.
I borrowed one last week and returned it to paying owner within 3 days. Nice to play with but the lack of external TMC input means that the TMC reception is useless - you really shouldn't have to be pleasantly surprised when it manages to pick something up.
I asked a while ago on another forum here for details of new devices which have a TMC jack. There don't seem to be any. A bit odd.
It seems to stick with Classic FM or BBC radio 4 which doesn't transmit the trafficmaster data.
That's a failing with Navigon's TMC implementation going way back to version 4 of the software. I think what's happening here is that the unit is recognising that Classic FM transmits some sort of TMC signal but won't be able to decode it (because Classic transmits the iTIS version of TMC signals rather than the TrafficMaster version). At that point it should give up and move on to try a different station/frequency. (I've no idea why it picks up BBC R4!)
I'm not overly surprised that Navigon have not fixed this yet (after half a decade!) as their understanding of TMC in the UK has been always been bloody-mindedly crap. Nevertheless, very annoying and needlessly stupid.
Thanks for mentioning this problem. I've been toying with the idea of coming back to Navigon but what with this and the fact that it isn't even a full implementation of TMC's available data (discussed in other threads), their chances of regaining me as a customer are ebbing away!

Here's the solution I came up with after a few week's fiddling:
Select Galaxy (a Global Radio station so it has the TMC data stream on it).
The select hold station rather than hold frequency.
That's it! Aside from issues with the placement of the aerial - mine works reliable just sitting in the passenger footwell on its way to the ciggie socket (although looking at the cable, it wouldn't be hard to split the aerial from the power lead as it's obvious which is which) this is as reliable as it gets.
I spent a lot of time fiddling with manual tuning and "hold frequency" but the above works fine for me on my daily grind from one coast of Scotland to the other (blame the house prices) - it other words, it's retuning itself fine and still capturing information.
Now, if TMC actually produced useful information, I'd be happy but it seems to miss out on a pile of stuff that itis (i.e. tomtom) notices up here in Scotland).
I bought my Navigon 2210 last week.
I didnt even realize I would get UK TMC for free
I turn on the TMC and was most pleased when it immediately started working. Notice it seems to constantly range, between
Radio 1, Radio 4, Classic FM, and Mercia.
Im in the midlands and it seems Mercia gives the best signal. Dont think you should ever set the unit to lock to one particular startion unless its acidentally locking on to the wrong one in which case its better to go to TMC , options and just press up or down tune to select any other startion and set it off ranging again.
Within 5 minutes it seems to pick up numerous traffic reports from all over the country including Scotland , typically about 80. I havent had TMC before but really like the way the jams come with 3 levels of warning, yellow or red warning for more sever jams. You can select the individual line for more detailed info and se map representation of any jam. When you come upon a reported jam there are jam car queue signs on the road representation.
Its worth noting that the display shows top right signal for satalite and TMC. A satalite dish shows GPS satalite fix, red no fix, grey fix (ie 4 or more satalites think). TMC a triangle with a ! in middle. red no reception. grey reception. something in between white triange with red ! for got a fix on a station but no data. You need to read manual to understand. Also if you go into options you can see exactly how many satalites or how strong radio TMC and what startion/frequency you are recieving on.
I imagine Navigon would think the areal in power cord was good enough, I mean it does not need a constant radio fix, if it can get a signal only once every few minutes that should surfice to get the radio info required.
It is a shame though they seem to have done this. I think a separate aerial input would be better.
If I carry the car charger and 2210 to my desk at work I can switch on the 2210 15 min before leaving work and read the jam report from the 2210 easier than using the internet but Id rather leave the charger in the car. I cant get satalite GPS fix from desk, radio reception is poor on a normal radio but I seem to be able to get TMC on the 2210. Might be Im close to Mercia FM transmitter? A normal USB cable does not work as an aerial?
Overall I am most impressed with the 2210.
If you have used a Garmin or TomTom before its a little different and needs a bit of time to get used to. Its not quite as intuative but this is only because its functionally rich for something with 3" screen.
Ill try and find some other thread or create one to review the 2210 if no one else has
