I'm considering buying the Colorado 300, in effect upgrading from a Vista CX for which I have UK Topo maps, v2. A couple of uncertainties here...

First, is it a simple process to transfer the license (and the maps) to a new GPS? I read in other topics that there had been problems here and wanted some reassurance on this score.

Second, does the Colorado have to be purchased in the UK for the license transfer to be possible? I have a trip to Dubai planned and I gather that the GPS has an attractive price there like 1799AED (£245). Again, there have been horror stories about Garmin UK "disowning" kit purchased abroad.

Any advice/comments welcome - and thanks in anticipation!

Regards

Normally it is impossible to transfer the Topo maps to another unit.

You would be saving at a risk approx. £30!!!!!!!!!! £270 on eBay

Valuable advice indeed - thanks for the link, too! I'm going to hang on and go for eBay...

I see the TOPO maps can be bought in three areas of GB on micro SD Card or complete GB on DVD.

Do you loose any functionality buying the SD card version over the DVD release when it comes to viewing the TOPO maps on your PC?

Many Thanks

If you wish to load other areas of TOPO GB you need the DVD.
If you wish to view/plan/record/track your visits you need the DVD.
If you only want it for the contours buy TOPO otherwise it is a waste of money, as footpaths are incomplete and road navigation is limited!

Yes indeed on their website it does say in red Please note: Maps on a preloaded data card cannot be copied or viewed on a computer.

Being foolish, I had already ordered the UK area on SD card to reduce cost Sad

Still, if the TOPO does not contain all paths etc. it is of no value to me anyway.

My Garmin SD Topo card just worked first time with no unlock issues etc or need to even select it.

Roads seem okay but as reported not many paths Sad

I will try it out and about along the River Ouse this Wednesday to check further.
