Lately I've noticed the 910 is taking ages to get a lock. Tonight having been driving for 20 minutes it still hadn't got a lock so I pulled over for 5 minutes and still nothing. Thinking I must be in a bad signal area I drove again for another few miles to a very open area and again waited but no lock. I then resorted to restarting it and again nothing.

So I did a cold reset; only on the second cold reset did I get anything but then it went totally weird. Every 20 seconds or so I would get a couple of satellites but it would give me a position that must have been 10 miles away; then back to no satellites!( I was stationary by the way) This situation repeated over and over again, always giving me a wildly incorrect position. Eventually I set off driving and again I was just stuck in this endless loop of a burst of signal, incorrect position, no signal. This went on and on until I pulled over again and did another cold reset; then finally everything started working normally.

I've learned to carry around a piece of wire to use as a reset tool but a 'green' 910 owner would have been stuffed. I know it's best to get a gps lock before setting off but I would expect it to get something eventually. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Yes on a number of occasions to be honest I have seen the same behaviour from my 910 - a reset with a pin fixes the problem though each time, its a bit of a pain at times but make sure you carry an official reset tool at all times (mines a safety pin) - Mike

I have my 710 set to "Startup preferences - Continue where I left off" and I never have this problem, because I'm always starting up from where I've last parked (I always use it whenever I drive, none of this "I know where I'm going nonsense!). My norm is to get a satellite lock within the time it takes to turn on the ignition and then fix my seatbelt and look around for all clear road and suchlike small delay.

I can offer you a relatively cheap, hand-crafted paperclip reset tool in raw metal finish - simply send me a lot of money and I'll send one back first class post. Twisted Evil Current special offer - buy one get two free. Laughing

The only trouble with it is that it's too big for the 910 reset hole.

So I ended up filing the end down. Laughing Laughing

Well, actually, all mine are backup reset tools - you can never have too many backups. Thumbs Up
