Hi,

I just got the Holux Gr-271 CF for my ppc. I tried it first on the ppc and with no avail aquired no sats. I tried it next on my Dell XPS with a CF adapter and used SIRFdemo. I used the Sirfdemo because it was mentioned that my Gr271 was in SIRF mode and was stuck. I connected with the proper com ports and baud rate and I could see activity from the gps in the reply windows and debug windows. It still was not aquiring a fix on any sats. Something must have happened because now I cannot get any response from the GPS unit. I tried my ppc and my pc with different programs like GPS Navigator, SIRFdemo, GPSviewer, and GPS gate. GPS gate says that the port is open but no data is coming through. GPSnavigator will send out the commands for Factory, Cold, Warm, and Hot starts but nothing else appears. Is it possible i screwed up the ROM? If so can I reprogramm it? by getting a rom update? I am at a loss...I havent even used it and I really dont want to send it back to the seller in the US because of delays. Any help will be appricated

Thanks

Hi guys!

I don't know anything about Pocket GMS devices, but I read a couple of reviews and this was the device I liked the most so far.

What can you tell me about Holux? Do they make good devices? Is this the way to go or there are better around here?

And most of all, do you recommend buying this particular one?

Thanks!

First off lets make sure non of your GPS related programs are still running in the back ground - go to Start/ Settings/ System Tab select the memory Icon then Running programs tab - now hit the Stop All button.

The 271 should be in NMEA mode NOT SiRF when supplied, but it does have a SiRF-III chipset. When you have tried the above try switching it to NMEA mode one of your programs - Baud rate is 4800, take it outside and wait for upto 30 mins away from a building and see if any of the data starts to flow from the unit - it should take considerably less time than this (the one I tried fired up and acquired a sat lock in under a min)

If you still have no joy, then I am afraid sending it back sounds like the only option, you are in the same predicament as a number of others who have purchased a Holux device from outside of the UK, had you purchased from the UK, then the UK based office would offer assistance - Mike

It is a decent reciever, very low power is consumed from the host device, I found it used less power than having the Bluetooth switched on when combined with the Ipaq-4700.
Very quick to acquire a signal, lightweight (in terms of mass not capability) - I also have a couple of Holux GPSlim236 units which again perform without fault, purchase from an approved supplier within your country of residence and you shouldn't go wrong - Mike

I had the very same problem with a holux gr 271 and had also tried
sirfdemo, and the unit stopped responding. What I did was to
not use the unit for 12 days. This allowed the builtin battery to
drain completely, and the unit would return to default factory
settings. After 12 days, the unit worked again, and after doing
some further research and learning more about the software (gpsviewer and sirfdemo) and how to use them and
gps tech , I got the unit to work flawlessly.

Glad to hear you got it running, its a cracking little device - what hardware/ software are you using it with?
I did have an issue getting it to work with my laptop, that was a driver related issue, but once resolved its fine.
The battery drain usually works to reset the units when they do this, I find that 72 Hours is typicaly long enough though - Mike

I am using the gps unit with my laptop, but I am planning on purchasing
a pda so I can use it in my automobile. I am in North America, so I
will be using Microsoft Streets and Trips or Delorme's Street Atlas.
I found that the supplied gps viewer crashes on my laptop (on either
Windows XP or Windows Vista ), so I initially changed to "gps diag".
I also had a driver problem, and I found that only the driver that came
with the unit on cd would work, while when I tried to upgrade using
the gr 271 driver on the holux website, it did not and the unit would
never get a fix on any satellites.
As for the time one should allow for the built-in battery to
drain, you're probably right. It would have been awful to
have had to send the unit all the back to Taiwan, and as you
are probably aware, the seller and Holux website are of little
help. I bought my unit on Ebay. Thanks for responding.

Hi mikealder sorry for asking this so late but did I get from your responce that you used this device without BT in the 4700. The reason I am asking is that I have just purchsed this device and it seems to auto switch the BT on. I can view satellites Ok whilst using GPS viewer but when I try to use tomtom I cannot see any. I am totally unsure wether I should be using a BT setup or a NEMA could be of any help and give a novice a walk through of the setup arrangements.

It is TomTom that is switching on the Bluetooth on your iPAQ.
Insert the CF GPS Unit to the iPAQ BEFORE you start TomTom.

In TomTom tap the sat strength meter followed by the second sat strength meter now press the configure button from the GPS Status page.

Select "Other NMEA GPS Receiver"
Baud "4800"
"CF_CARD GE

your CF GPS unit should start up with the orange light on the side, if the Bluetooth is still running on the iPAQ use Bluetooth settings to turn it off - Mike
