Maplins site says mid-May and I can't see someone as big as Maplins being 2nd in the queue. Can you?

I'm surprised no moderator has responded to the mysterious disappearance of the new range from TT UK website.

TT are just about the biggest manufacturer of GPS devices and Pocket GPS World does devote a lot of space to their stuff, including covering the announcement of the new range - so I would have thought they might have been curious about why the entire new range has been removed from the TT UK website ?!

Is there a moderator out there who has any info? (I did email TT myself but got no reply - no surprises there then!)

hi ted the team do get early info of upcoming products from time to time and we as moderators we do get to know bits of information passed on to us by the team from time to time as team members would most likely have close contact with the major gps companies . but that kind of information would only stay within tomtom for obvious reasons i would think. if any of the team did know they would most likely be gagged buy an nda agreement

the above is only me guessing by the way

You never know - they might have listened to all the feedback about text to speech!!!!

But somehow I doubt it .................

hmm - my point was that it has only been removed from the uK pages on TT's website - it is still there on all the other countries - which seemed a bit odd. I thought perhaps a moderator might be curious enough to ask TT....!

even if a moderaor did ask tt they would tell us as were only really users of the website here to help the team in keeping the site going and helping other users where we can so as moderators we would get the same answers as you im afraid as i said earlier even if the team asked and got an answer they would most likely be gagged by an nda as the info would most likely be deemed comercially sensitive.

back on topic in not convinced by text to speech myself having used it in action with aa navigator and copilot 5 is was ok but the voice was too quiet and to fast to catch what it was saying im actual use great in theory not as good in practice but if tomtom have magicly done wonders with it maybe ill be a convert

Isn't the 'topic' the new range in general? - and didn't several other people mention this mysterious disappearance earlier in this thread?

What could possibly be commercially sensitive - again I fear you miss the point - the new range is still there on the website for every other country but the UK and that's what I find a bit odd. Surely it is a simple question to ask TT - 'Why have you removed the details of the new range from only the UK website?'

It indicates to me that our supply will be coming later than everyone else's....?

tedkay - there's a big difference between a moderator and a member of the PocketGPSW "team" as they call themselves.
A moderator does not (neccessarily) have anything to do with the running of the company or website, but is just asked if they would like to help keep the forum running smoothly. As such they have no "clout" with TomTom whatsoever (or get review units :D )
The "team" on the other hand..... Wink

Could it be that TomTom have made the classic technology industry mistake of announcing a product launch before they are able to ship or before they have run down old stock?

I've seen other companies make this mistake and witnessed the resulting sales downturn as everyone puts off their buying decisions in anticipation of a new model.

It some cases this can have very serious consequences in terms of manufacturing, distributor stock and even cash flow.

Yes - that could be it. But it still doesn't explain why they only removed the details from the UK site..?? Or are we to believe that only UK people are sensible enough to think "Ah - there's a new model coming out soon, so I won't go out and buy one of old ones!"

I called tomtom earlier today and the person I spoke to played dumb and said she didn't know why they were not on the uk site and they were not on the other ones either. Then when I pointed out to her that they were on the other sites she was like "well uh we still don't have a release date for the tomtoms" (even though someone else told me they were definitely being released in mid May)

I really haven't a clue what is wrong with tomtom..... Confused

Hi all.

An e-mail I got from Tom Tom on Thursday 13th April regarding UK release dates should put the dampeners on things a bit.
I quote:
"An exact release date is not yet known but we hope to release this item sometime within this 2006 2nd quarter".
Unquote.
So there you go chaps, could be as late as end of June at the moment.
So with the problems of demand outstripping supply during the first couple of months I think I'll put it on my Christmas list. Crying or Very sad
I was waiting for them to be released cos I've had mine nicked (not from my car, I hasten to add). Evil or Very Mad
So now it's confirmed, I've got over 7 months to peruse the competition. :D

Hi everyone,

As you can see, I'm new here. What a super forum.

I have been using my iPAQ for a number of years and have generally been happy. Have upgraded from TomTom V3 to V5 but did not know about the new GO versions until I got an email from Maplin.

I have had problrms with my iPAQ battery going flat and then have to reload TomTom which is a real pain, so I am interested in the new GO options. Also I have an external gps receiver and as I am getting another car it will be good not to have to worry about the extra wires.

I have been reading the forum but have a couple of questions. I usually drive with the sound off and just go by the map. So will the text to speech just add the street names to directions (I presume I can still have the usual directions, if I wish). Secondly I have not seen any mention of postcodes for the new versions. I tend to set up my itinery the night before by postcode,so it is ready when I get in the car. Does all the versions offer full postcode as the 510 seems a suitable option for me.

Many thanks in advence.

Alan
