Hi, I checked with Navman to see if they support installing the main SmartST V3 program to SD card rather than internal memory to which they replied NO! I was just wondering (before I try it myself) if anyone has managed to reliably install this software to SD card? If so any tips to getting it to run smoothly or is it nice and straight forward?

Shaun.

Shaun, Are you talking SmartST V3 for Palm or PPC?

I have been using SmartST V3 for Palm. Whilst it may be technically possible to run it from the SD card using a third party utility I do not think it would be worth the bother. As far as I can see the entire application and ancillary files (excluding maps of course) is only 2mb in size.

As an aside I have just under 1GB of maps loaded onto the Sd card and it still works fine even though Navman recommend smaller cards.

What's the reason you want to install to an SD card?

The main reason was to try and keep as much free memory as possible on the PDA - I only have 57MB available and with the few other programs I have installed things were getting very tight once the maps were loaded - So I figured if I can save another 4MB or so it might be worth it.

Anyway, I bit the bullet and tried it - Loading took an age (all England and wales maps) and something must have timed out because it only ever loaded the south of England maps and I then had to go and re-enable the other maps everytime I started the program.

Bottom line is I have now reinstalled back to the main PDA memory and all is funtioning well again...oh well! Next time I'll buy a PDA with 128MB.

I assumed that would be the reason.
All maps go on the SD card so they should not be an issue on the PDA as far as memory is concerned.

For what it's worth I have 64MB available and have SmartSTv3, Anquet Maps, Pocket Streets, Mapopolis and TomTom Navigator 3 installed to the PDA. Each will work fine with no memory issues. The maps for each application are on the memory card.

My problem was that I only had 56.7MB available before I started installing my apps! Which after I had installed everything I wanted, left approx 25MB free...It just means I need to be selective on the maps I load rather than just load everything all the time. And of course if I find any other apps that I want I might then have to upgrade my PDA to be able to keep them all installed at the same time.

Maybe I should have stated that I have 64MB to start with and after installing all the above I have approx 35MB memory allocated to programs with 26MB in use when running SmartST with all the UK and Ireland maps active.
