and you have a sdcard installed?

all i did was copied the pna update as instructions to the sdcard and then insert into myguide3100 and press the reset button and on reboot it said updating, after that i had to reinstall the myguide ...

Get a empty sdcard in a card reader, put your myguide cd in your pc, it will give you an option to prepare card for firmware/flash memory write. Once it has done that put it in your myguide 3100 de ...

But isnt the update on my guide for the 3000? ive tried that and the navigating didnt work, then i made a sdcard with the cd and reflashed the internal rom and everything works.

I got my car charger from ebay for the n50. There is plenty on there for under a £5

Have you still got the cd that came with your myguide 3100? you dont need any files on that sdcard, the cd can prepare the sdcard for flashing the internal rom and reinstalling the maps.
