I have just received an email from Tomtom to visit their new portal and take a peek at the new services they have on offer. Wow. I see they have some great new services such as IQ route planning. Only trouble is I have to replace my TT one to take advantage. Surely all that is required is to renew the software on the device? Apart from TMC which I understand does not work that well and perhaps a bigger screen, the other devices do the same as my TT one don't they? Ok so I might have to replace the memory card but that’s just a tenner! When are companies going to realise that in this day of environmental concerns we really need to use our electronic items until they are no longer working? That is they don’t physically power on and a repair is prohibitive. I really believe that once you have a device then new services should be available for that product too and all you have to do is buy the new software. Does this not make environmental sense?
On another note. I own the Nokia N95 mobile phone. I have had it now for about six months. It's a great phone apart from its battery life but I knew about that before I bought it. My gripe is that it is unstable with TT one traffic updates. Sometimes it works for weeks without issue. Then something happens be it a POI update via my PC or even it just being switched on and it won’t work. This problem only started after downloading an update for the TT one. I managed to fix the problem by rolling back the software to the TT one earlier version but as soon as I connected my device to my laptop to transfer some POI's, it updated the device to the new version and the blue tooth failed to work again. Oh must point out that this is the same problem with the Nokia 6280 (which is on the compatibility list)
I called TT who simply said the phone is not compatible. However when setting the service up the phone comes up on the "choose your phone" list. Surely if it worked before it should work now even on the new version of the firmware? The N95 is a popular handset among the business community. Does it not make sense to make TT plus services work with the N95? How can we put pressure on TT to make their devices compatible more quickly?

A long moan, but to reply to the first bit, in all probability, TomTom WILL produce versions of the new software for older devices, they always have done so far. And they do it FREE.

There will obviously be some things that cannot be guaranteed to work if there are hardware differences between devices,
AND it might make environmental sense but it obviously makes NO commercial sense if every old machine was upgradable to be EXACTLY the same as a new one. TomTom would be out of business pretty soon if no-one ever bought a new version.
