Being new to Sat Nav I wanted an entry level item to get me into it. After looking through a couple of forums for help I decided on a Trumpion item. When it eventually arrived (delivery ruined by Parcel Force again)I was pleased with it.

I have a couple of basic questions which I have been trying to put to Trumpion, but I can’t get hold of them.
Their www site is non existent.
Their fax number is never answered.
Their telephone number is never answered.
I did get through to them via their e-bay ‘contact seller’ address & they said to use a certain e-mail address,,,,, which has also been ignored so far.
It doesn’t matter how good a product is - it can be ruined by the lack of service from the retailer/manufacturer.
I’d think twice before buying from them again.

Anyway - on to my quest:

Battery:
1/ When I go on a car journey, is it alright to keep the unit plugged into the car-charger, or is it supposed to run on battery only ?
2/ Do I have to run the battery right down before I re-charge ?

Warning:
3/ Can I set a 'warning' to only bleep 'occasionally' ?
If I go over say 60 miles per hour, the warning bleeps start,,,, & carries on till I slow down - this is irritating. I don't want to turn the warning off altogether, but rather have an occasional bleep. Can the unit be set for this ?
4/ Can I add a different warning sound ?

Accuracy:
5/ The unit is not very accurate,,,, even with my home address !!!
When I approach my home (on the main A30) the unit tells me to turn off before I get to the Post Code,,,,, I usually ignore it, but today I started to follow the instructions. When I was about 3 miles away from home & it was still telling me to drive away from home, I gave up.
I am thinking that this is down to the data being fed into it,,,,, but my neighbours Garmin unit picks up the post Code straight away & leads him to it.

I have just read on the 'net, that the Trumpion are a re-badged Nav Gear N190 ?!?! Is this true ? If so, maybe I can ask the same questions to N190 owners ?

Thanks to you all & wishing you a Happy & Prosperous New Year

I personally don't know anything about it, but if you put 'Trumpion' into the Search Box (See Link at top of the page), there are a few references to it.

Have you got a Users Manual, either paper version or on a CD?

What software is on the device, there should be a help or about icon on the device in the menu, I thought these devices ran Route 66 but I am not 100% - Mike

RICHARD: I did a search - but nothing for me i'm afraid.
MIKE: Software: v2.0.0.10.20 RomVersion: 17C.YF.3.Q.1023. Processor: ATLASIII Ram: 64Mb
I do have a Route 66 CD with it, but havn't done anything with it yet. I wanted to get to grips with the basics before I confuse myself with features !

Right so once it is running Route 66 which is a decent navigation software to be honest you can add Speed Cameras to the device along with spoken camera warnings so as you approach a camera the device will tell you the type of camera and speed rating for the location.
To do this you will require a subscription to the Members Area of this site and also you will need to download the Spoken alert files for the warnings. Have a read of This Page for a "How To" for the camera installation and set up.

To answer a couple of your earlier questions, don't bother about leaving the device powered up in the car it will not harm it in any way.

Don't bother flattening the battery as this can cause more damage to be honest, leaving it plugged in while in use should sort this issue out.

I am not too sure what options are available for over speed warning and to be honest in alot of cases this feature is dependent upon map data, the inbuilt road speed is far from 100% accurate, look into the speed camera option though as this is more important. - Mike

I've had some emails on this unit. I strongly suspect the unit has been sold with pirated TomTom software on at least two occasions that I am aware of, did anyone get original software (TomTom branded memory Card) or the Tomtom Credit Card product key if it came with TomTom software?

Also, can anyone confirm if our safety cameras were installed on the device?

DARREN:
1/ SD Card:
Mine came with a SCANDISC SD. FYI: Software: v2.0.0.10.20. RomVersion: 17C.YF.3.Q.1023. Processor: ATLASIII. Ram: 64Mb. Is this supposed to be TomTom,,, if not,,,, any idea what it is ?
2/ Cameras: It certainly picked up my one & only local camera when I tried it,,,, straight out of the box,,,, but I don't know about any others.

Any other information re this software would be appreciated.

thanks

DARREN:
I got mine from e-$ay
A current number is (190186735295)
Prices vary (NOTE delivery charges).
Also worth considering is that there is no customer care or back-up service !!!

Hence my question. When there are big brand devices at the same price I wondered what attracted you to an unknown device?

Darren: If I had your experience, then maybe I wouldn't.
I did try asking for help beforehand, but it came up with nothing.
I had to start somewhere & a lot of brand names mean nothing to me.

If I needed to rely a unit to save my life all day every day, then maybe I would go for something else.
I don't need the thing,,,, I only wanted one

In the meantime, I have to make do with what i've got & want to get the best out of it. To that end, I need help, and rely on forums like this for such help.

You never know - in a few months time, they may just turn out to be one that meets your approval,,,,, but then again,,,, they might not !

Thanks for your input.

Apologies, that didn't come across as I had intended. It wasn't meant to be a dig at anyone who had bought one I assure you. I was honestly interested as to what lead to the decision to purchase.

Darren: No need to apologise (to me any way). This is your game and of course you are interested.
If there was a certain item out there that suited everybody, there would be no need for opinions ! As it is, like in most walks of life - it's horses for courses.

For me - this is just a gimmick. If I had been aware of a better item for the same money, I might have made a different choice. I certainly wouldn't have paid much more for such a thing.

To All Readers:
I would still like to know of a better item for similar money - I could soon sell this if I needed to - please feel free to offer your recommendations - & reasons.

Thanks again Darren
