Nuvi 360T - SE P990i - SMS messages

I have a Nuvi 360T and a SE P990i. After pairing the phone with bluetooth, if I go to the phone option and then open the Text messages option, I get a list of Inbox/outbox/compose sms etc. I don't get the normal warning that says with other phones I've had that this feature is not supported.
I have had a text sent to me and it goes in the inbox but it isn't read out to me. I can click on it in the inbox and then it is read out to me. I have a TTS voice selected. Defeats the object of handsfree really.
What am I doing wrong please, is there another setting I am missing, either on the phone ot the Nuvi?
