Anyone know how to use GPS mobile phone in new zealand?

I am a real newbie here. Could anyone help me to figure out this question?

To my knowledge, if I buy a GPS-enable mobile phone and get some special software installed, I may be able to view my phone position on the google map. How? I am in New zealand. What should I buy to make it possible? We have two main mobile operating companies, Vodafone and Telecom. Vodafone has a cheap data plan so sometimes I use it to check my email. I was also told I may send the position by using their message system. That is too expensive because it costs 20c per message.

Could anyone tell me a cheap solution to view my position on the google map?

Welcome to the forum, You will need a Pocket PC based phone, these are the devices that look like a PDA and use a touch screen. If you want a standalone unit capable of doing the Google Map display look in to a PDA style phone with built in GPS (HTC P3300 Artemis or derivitive such as O2 XDA Orbit, T-Mobile MDA C-III).
