Average speed cameras that monitor a stretch of roadworks on the A14 in Cambridgeshire have caught almost 5000 speeding drivers.
The cameras have covered the stretch of road between junctions at Girton and Histon since April 2014, snapping almost 12 drivers a day.
Most of those ticketed opted for a speed awareness course at a cost of £90, whilst 1,454 took three penalty points and a fine.
A spokesman for the RAC told the BBC that variable speed cameras were highly effective at eliminating the stop-start culture of static cameras where drivers slow down as they approached and speed up again when out of range.
Tony Barrios, who runs driver awareness courses commented "This is a short section of road and sticking to the limit will not delay a driver by much."
If this is another attempt on the part of journalists to sound sensationalist, it only does so because they carefully hide all the facts. In journalism, it's too easy to quote a BIG number that sounds good, but lacking in any context.
The A14 carries some 86,000 vehicles per hour, it's capacity is 60,000. While those figures relate to part of the A14 further north, the other side of Cambridge, I don't see them being that much less at Histon. Let's say 60,000 vehicles per day. At 12 tickets per day, that's 0.02% exceeding the limit enough to get a ticket (presuming enforcement at 10%+2). That's hardly a huge rate, and I suspect the number of people who don't understand the meaning of the word "average" is much higher, but were just lucky (or, more likely, unable to speed because of levels of traffic who were sticking to the limit).
