Nooby question. I have just got a galaxy S2 phone which runs on the gingerbread 2.2.3. os. I am running google maps, and I wish to know if there is a camera alert app for this application. thanks fred39.

Hi Fred, can confirm works perfectly on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 on my Nexus S.

My only regret is that I cant run Google maps navigation at the same time. Still never mind

This is my first posting here and I am unsure if this is the correct thread for it, but I'll give it a try.
I would like some opinions and views on the CamerAlert software (for TomTom and Android), vs the Novus Talisman software (which I HAVE tried and liked on the TomTom).
I too recently acquired a new Samsung Galaxy S2 and I'm still coming to terms with it. It's my first Android device.
I also own a TomTom GO 740 and I must say, it's superior in use for the purpose compared to a smartphone. I've tried CoPilot Live on it.
Currently CamerAlert is being offered at the attractive price of £14.95 whilst the Novus Talisman software is £39.99 for a year.
Though the savings are appealing, I wonder how they compare, regardless of price.

We believe our data is superior, but we'd be accused of being biased so feel free to ask our users!
If you subscribed to our database you could use it on your TomTom AND the Android app for all the same price.
If you submit a new camera then you can qualify for free lifetime updates. On average around 500 people per year get that 'award'.
Our database covers the whole world, is the Novus UK-only? I'm not sure... But if you drive abroad on holiday etc then at least you still get warnings from ours.

I'm not terribly worried about your bias in this regard, though of course I would welcome replies from users here as well.
It appears a very good deal indeed, especially if it is usable on both TomTom and Android!
As for me coming across a new camera - it appears quite unlikely to me, though I'll bet others may have said something similar beforehand. In any case, it's a nice offer of exchange.
I'm unsure if Novus covers more than the UK - it may not, but, if I were to use a GPS solution elsewhere, it is most likely to be in Canada (I'm originally from Toronto) or in the U.S., and, as manned radar units are common there, speed cameras are generally not in use, and if they were, detectors such as we use here are generally illegal back there. Nasty - huh?
I'd be pleased to support PocketWorld GPS, having been on the mailing list for over 4 years now. About time - eh?
This looks like a very good program, especially with the support of active members, constantly keeping the database as up-to-date as possible, and the addition of average speed camera detection is a nice bonus.
Finally, if I wish to make use of it on my TomTom 740 and my Galaxy S2, would it be better for me to order it via the online form with our desktop computer, or can I do so via the Android Market and still be able to use it on the TomTom?
In either case, how would upgrades to the database and subscriptions be handled?

A dozen or so members manage it each and every week, new cameras, changed speed limits, new roadworks set-ups etc etc

And so our database would give you cover there too and more chances to report new cameras.

Subscribe on-line here. Then you can buy the app in the market and link it to your subscriber account.
Updates to the CamerAlert App are done via the app, updates to the database for satnavs are done via our website. _________________ Darren Griffin

Okay then - I will subscribe via the website and later through Android Market.
By the way - to repeat - the database would NOT be useful in North America in general because speed cameras are NOT used, just manned radar, that is to say, police sit in cars with their radar rigs, or jump out at one in the city from behind a tree or other screen (speaking of Toronto), with their smoking radar gun in hand, and write up a speeding ticket toute-de-suite.
And being caught using a radar detector of any sort lands one a very hefty fine, points against one's driving licence and confiscation of the detector.
Ah well, at least there is need no need to worry whether one has been nailed or not when ticketing is immediate! :-)

We have a good number of subscribers and users in both north america and canada and there ARE a growing number of fixed (gatso etc) cameras as well as more and more redlight and turn-on-red cameras too.
as the app and/or database is not a radar detector then you should be ok. we are only aware of one country (switzerland) that explicitly bans the use of gps-based location warnings, a couple of other countries (ireland and germany) in theory have 'banned' them but it's either not enforced due to laziness or the law is so ambiguous that the cops don't even bother...
actual radar detection (catching scatter etc) is illegal in many countries (and should be in the uk too soon as well) although most 'hand held' units these days use laser for better accuracy and, as far as i am aware, longer range. these wouldn't be detected by a radar detector for probably obvious reasons!
