Hi
Ive been trying to run the cameralert app but the battery flattens over time even though its plugged in to the lighter socket. It shows the charging sign on the battery and it managed to not drop for approx an hour then it started to flatten the battery.
Whats the best type of charger to get to actually charge the phone as well as run the app?

There was some discussion HERE and there has been discussion that running GPS Apps is a power hungry business. I have the expensive solution (TomTom Car Kit, £99.99) and my iPhone actually recharges whilst running the app and receiving phone calls and/or texts. It may be worth mentioning that my driving pattern is mostly decent distances, therefore time plugged in - I'd guess (no proof) that short distances going on and off charge might not be good for it.

Yeah I had considered the tomtom cradle but i don't need the handsfree and the gps signal on the iPhone is fine, so for
me it would be a really expensive charger and nothing else! I was going to get a USB charger from maplins as it was rated at 1 amp but after reading the other post it mentioned 2 amp so will need to have a hunt for one that is rated nearer that. My driving pattern is long journeys too so could really do with getting this sorted out.

| What is the power rating of the tomtom cradle? Anyone know where you can get a compact 2amp car charger or will a 1amp one do? |

What charger are you using at the moment? The sweeping answer is, cheap iPhone chargers don't work. Get a decent branded charger such as the one from Griffin and you'll be fine.
It has quite a high current draw when GPS is running but I've found the Griffin PowerJolt is up to the job.

Id like one thats quite compact and Maplins do a compact 1a usb charger would that be enough?
I noticed the powerjolt was mantioned any idea what thats rated too?

But the Powerjolt Se is not rated for iPhone 3G, it's an iPod charger.
1A should be enough. I use a "Powerjolt for iPhone" and that is rated at 1A and works so the one you link to 'should' work but I couldn't confirm that.
The issue you have to consider is that Apple use a non-standard method to detect the chargers that they approve. These require the provision of a pullup resistor in the charger itself. Those chargers that are not Apple/iPhone aware may not charge at all.

Thanks for the reply, it said on the box works for iphone so i assume it means the original iphone? I think i'll definately get a powerjolt and will try one of the ones from maplins on the off chance it works as its a more compact charger.
How far out the socket approx does the powerjolt stick out.

The two amp rated charger cable I use with my TomTom car kit is part number 4N01.006 - Not too sure which device it was supplied with it might have been the Go-930 or One XL.
I have never had a charging issue with this combination but I do have the mount positioned on a Brodit Pro-Clip directly in front of one of the dash airvents which keeps the iPhone cool - If the battery gets too hot in the phone it will generally stop charging to save it catching fire - Mike |

Yes I expect so, definitely not rated for 3G/3GS

Thanks again for all the replies and help, i'll take that charger back to hafrauds and exchange it for the powerjolt one. Didnt really want the spiral cable but to have a charger that works will be the main thing.

The PowerJolt comes with a straight, black standard USB/iPhone sync cable. It's not curly?
