I have seen a lot of non branded GPS systems out there, most have horrible user interfaces, poor routing ability and bad maps. However most seem to run on a windows CE platform. So my question is does a generic gps software package exist which could be installed on a non branded sat nav much like windows is installed on a PC? I did read a little on the net about Microsoft making something like this but I think it was only for new systems.

by the time you have paid £50-£80 for the unbranded satnav then £50-£80 on the software then you may as well just buy a decent satnav in the first place!
just my opinion though

I'm thinking about the people who have already purchased the device and find the interface terrible, or out of date. Have you ever seen the cartrek 200.

ah, ok! sorry, i thought you were meaning to purchase one specifically to buy different software for it!
WinCE is a cut down version of WinMob which may or may not have all the feature required for different navigation software. it will only have the parts required for the original software installation so it may work on some but not others.
you would need to hack the boot process (which i know is do-able but it's not something i've ever done or needed to do) and basically tell it to load into windows rather than autoloading the current navigation software.
i'm out of my depth now so i'll leave it to more experienced users in this field!
if they've not had the naff device long though they could always return it as not fit for purpose then spend a bit more on a decent one

you should look at the likes of Mguider,Igo and memory map and check thier compatability, unfortunately with MS moving up to win mob 6, you are gradually moving further into a neglected market,I myself am a PDA user for reasons other than just Navigation, but you should find the ones mentioned should run under win ce but you also should take into account the processor speed, _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

You could have a look at the discussons around unlocking the Navman devices - from the iCN510 upwards they used WinCE, and there has been a lot of work done to put things like installing Tomtom and others. There is (was?) a dedicated website for just this task, but last time I posted the link one thing led to another, the discussion was moderated. I am sure you can find it with Google. |

Thanks for your help
I see now google are planning a free turn by turn sat nav system. It would be great if they could set it so it could be installed on older crappy sat navs. I know many in car systems leave a lot to be decided. |

It's off-board so no use unless you have a data connection. _________________ Darren Griffin |
