The Garmin i3 seems to have a problem in the software when attempting to load more than 85 categories of custom POIs.

If you load more than 85 categories of POI then this will result in the i3 locking when loading the map. At this point the i3 will not go any further.

To recover the i3 to a workable system again you will need to either:

1) Remove the microSD card from the i3 and place it in a card reader. On the PC (after taking a backup of the entire card) delete the poi.gpi file which will be found in the /garmin/poi directory. Replace the card in the i3 and everything should now work again.

2) Download the beta version of the POILoader software from the Garmin website http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1673 then when you connect your i3 and run POILoader select the option to delete existing pois. Note that PocketGPSWorld.com accepts no responsibility for software from any external companies. You must acknowledge and accept the risks of running beta software.

This feature of the Garmin software does not appear to affect the Nuvi range.

Thanks for the fix! Once I had deleted the POIs I could re-connect via USB, and then re-install the firmware and re-upload the (shorter) list of POIs.

PS, if you need a handy reader for your Transflash cards, then this one is quite cheap (SanDisk MobileMate 5 in 1):

Well, after downloading the latest POI's, my i3 also locked up. Over the holidays, I have browsed the Forum, tried all the reset procedures (with and without the TransFlash card). Re-installed the drivers. Downloaded the beta POI loader, deleted all the POI's. All to no avail.

I can switch on the i3. It will go through the warning screen and present the usual options. However, when I try to select an option, the i3 freezes again. Then reluctant to switch off.

This is actually a repalcement i3 which I received from Garmin (following a mounting socket failure) only 3 weeks ago.

I am going to phone Garmin tomorrow, see what they can advise.

This is exactly the behaviour I had - I tried everything I could using the USB connection on the i3. I was advised by Garmin to re-install all my software on the PC. Personally, I don't think this method will work, given the symptoms - i.e. the POI loader and Webupdater were working fine, it was the i3 that wasn't talking to anything. I highly recommend you get a card reader and use that instead (see the original post and my follow-up). Then delete the poi file manually.

I can only agree with the previous post. I too tried for hours to reset my i3 after I uploaded new POIs. The new beta version of the POI Loader does not solve this problem as the unit locks up and will not communicate via the USB port. MicroSD adapter on order Confused ! That all said I have found some interesting test functions built in by pressing various buttons on power up!!!

Well, I phoned Garmin at 8.30 this morning. Explained the problem and outlined the various tasks I had performed to try and resolve the issue and unlock the i3.

My unit is 11 months old but Garmin told me to return it to them for repair/replacement (without any quible) as it is still under warranty

Posted it off Special Delivery this morning and will let you know what happens, as and when.

Hi

This problem has just occurred with my NUVI 300.

Suggest you amend your listing to show that it does affect NUVI as well.

I got a brand new i3 back from Garmin (with ver. 9 mapping) in 4 working days! Brill service from Garmin. NB I bought my i3 on ebay 11 months ago.

Contacted Garmin and they promptly supplied me with a replacement unit.

Hi.

I have just brought a new Nuvi 660 and wanted to load the speed camera database onto it from Pocket GPS world. I have read on this site that some people are crashing their Nuvi loading POI. Is this likely to happen if I load Speed cameras?

Thanks

Hello,
Please be aware it also affects the NUVI 300 and 360, has I had both units and they both crashed. I had no way recovering them.

I now have a third unit, however I feel a bit unsure about loading anything on to the unit ant advise will welcome.

Thanks

Ive just loaded up the beta version and it froze. Followed instructions to delete the poi file and start again and it didnt work.

If I reverted back to the previous POI loader would this cure the problem and allow me to work as normal. Dont particularly want to call Garmin tomorrow.

Your advice would be appreciated.
